Chapter 16

Today is the day of the trial. I am so nervous. What if they don't find Daxtyn guilty. I looked in the mirror. I was in a casual blue dress and covered the bruises the best I could with make up but it wasn't enough. I sighed and came out of my room and saw Sodapop and Darry finishing up getting ready and Ponyboy already ready and on the couch.
"Darry?" I said sadly.
"Yeah?" Darry said looking at me.
I just ran over to him and hugged him and cried.
"I'm sorry. I'm sorry about this. This wouldn't be happening if I had never dated Daxtyn." I cried.
I could tell Darry was shocked as well as Soda and Pony. I didn't have to look up I just knew.
"It's okay kid. It's not your fault." Darry said.
"Darry's right Courtney. This is Daxtyn's fault and if the judge doesn't give him what he deserves they are stupid." Soda said. I nodded and wiped my tears.
"Everything will be okay." Ponyboy said.
"Let's go." Darry said and we hopped in the truck to head to court.
I sat with the lawyer that was appointed to me and my brothers sat in the pew behind me as soon as we got there. Once we had sat down again after rising for the judge the trial began. Daxtyn was up first and I couldn't look at him without crying so I looked away and glanced at my brothers. Darry was remaining calm, Pony had an angry look on his face and Soda's was mixed with angry and upset.
"State your name for the record." Daxtyn's attorney said.
"Daxtyn Conners." Daxtyn said.
"You had Miss Curtis had a relationship yes?" His lawyer asked.
"Yes we dated for about a year and a half almost." Daxtyn said.
"Would you say that it was a good relationship?" His lawyer asked.
"I would say it was I mean we had a few arguments here and there." Daxtyn said.
"Bullshit!" Soda yelled which was shocking because he rarely ever got angry.
"Order! Control yourself or I will clear this court room right now!" The judge yelled and Darry pulled Soda down to sit.
"Did you get along with Miss Curtis's family?" His lawyer asked.
"Yes." Daxtyn said lying through his teeth and I know Soda wanted to attack him but Darry held him in place by his arm.
"No further questions." His lawyer said and then my lawyer asked him a few questions and I can tell he lied in some of the questions and then it was my turn.
"State your name for the record." My lawyer said.
"Courtney Curtis." I said.
"You dated Mr. Connors is that correct?" My lawyer said.
"Yes." I said.
"When you were dating did he ever exhibit signs of abusive behavior?" My lawyer asked.
"Objection! Cause for speculation." Daxtyn's Lawyer said.
"I'll rephrase. When Daxtyn was angry did he ever get physical?" My lawyer asked.
"Yes. When I looked at other guys or they looked at me he would get jealous, he would accuse me of cheating, he um would get angry at the slightest thing." I said.
"What for example would make him angry?" My lawyer said.
"If I wasn't wearing something he approved of he would lost his temper." I said.
"And you were recently raped by Mr. Connors as well?" My lawyer said.
"Yes." I said.
"Was this the first time?" My lawyer asked.
I looked at my brothers and bit my lip. This wasn't the first time but my brothers didn't know that.
"No." I said with tears in my eyes.
"When was the first time?" My lawyer asked
"We had been dating for about 6 months. I was at Daxtyn's house and he had asked me if I loved him. I said of course and then he started to kiss me and then he s-started to put his hands up my shirt and pushed me onto his bed. I broke from the kiss and told him to stop and that I wasn't ready but he didn't listen then he slapped me. He then ripped my clothes off and raped me. After h-he was done h-he said that wasn't so bad was it? And then he kissed me as if nothing happened and went to shower and left me in his bed crying." I said
"Can you describe the night you were coming home from work? What happened?" My lawyer said.
"I was coming home from the diner I work at and then I was attacked from behind and I knocked my head against the floor and I was about to go unconscious and then I saw Daxtyn's eyes and his tattoo." I said
"No further questions." My Lawyer said and then Daxtyn's Lawyer asked me a few questions.
"You say that Mr. Conners has abused you. Do you have any proof of these accusations?" His lawyer said. I wiped the make up off my face and arms.
"Is this enough proof for you! I have a broken wrist because of him and bruises on my stomach." I said.
"You were blacked out. How do you even know he raped you? You could be accusing the wrong guy for all we know." His lawyer said.
"I know it was him. I saw his tattoo and I know his eyes anywhere. They're always filled with such hatred and anger." I said.
He then asked me a few more questions and then I stepped down and saw Sodapop talking to my lawyer.
"Any other witnesses?" The judge asked.
"I have just been informed that Sodapop Curtis. Courtney's twin brother wishes to testify." My lawyer said shocking me.
"Objection the defense has no record of this witness." Daxtyn's lawyer said.
"Step forward." the judge said and my attorney and Daxtyn's lawyer talked with judge and then stepped back.
"I will allow this witness. We will reconvene after lunch." The judge said. I then got up and went to my brothers. I hoped Soda's testimony would help put Daxtyn away.
