The elevator ding's to a stop and I step out. The lobby is extremely quiet as I walk through it, taking in all of it's classy attributes. The soft carpeted floors, the large pot plants that framed it's span. It was nothing like the level below where I had been staying for the past 7 years.
I pause outside the only door on this level that gave rise to the penthouse suite and knocked- once, twice. By the fourth knock the door opened. Infront of me stood a 6 foot tall giant, smartly dressed in a 3 piece black suit that brought out his bluish green eyes. I still have no idea where he gets those from probably paternal but I wouldn't remember.
"I was just about to come get you," he stated enthusiastically- as enthusiastically as a brooding business man could be.
"Get me? I'm here to say goodbye." I was confused. Either he forgot or he was choosing to not remember some vital information. Im not even that surprised to be honest.
"You're leaving today?!" He was stunned.
Typical Alex. He had a bad habit of forgetting things, especially important ones, unless his assistant remembers for him. You'd swear he was 40 years older than he actually was with the way his memory works. It was the one thing that really annoyed me about him but other than that I could never hate him.
Alexander Grey. Big brother and best friend- technically only friend but he'll never catch me saying that out loud. His ego is big enough. We've always been extremely close even though there was a five year age difference between the two of us. Alex had been my guide and rock for as long as I can remember. He was my confidant and knew things that even our mother didn't and I preferred it to stay that way. Nobody wanted to relive any of that.
"Are you kidding me? I reminded you at the beginning of this week."
He scratched his head in embarrassment, "Well, I forgot and anyway, you can't go today," he shrugged nonchalantly, taking me by surprise. He's usually very accustomed to things going his way. Very older brother like.
"What do you mean? My bags are already packed and Sam is waiting for me downstairs. I have a flight to catch." I babbled on but he wouldn't have it.
"Yeah, you have a flight on my private jet. I'll call the pilot and reschedule your flight and Sam can drop your bags off and then take the day off. Problem solved."
God, He's frustrating. "Alex, I wanted to get there early and settle in before heading to work tomorrow." Was he ignoring me on purpose because it sure felt like it when he diverted the conversation.
"Why are we still standing here? Get inside," he side stepped, allowing me to enter his grand penthouse suite. The inside of the suite was fully illuminated with natural light that entered from the massive glass windows that opened onto the balcony. The classy black and white interior brought out every feature on the first floor. "You're coming with me to the kids charity fundraiser."
I groaned, rolled my eyes and sighed loudly. This was not a surprise at all. Over the years of Alex being in business, he has dragged me to almost every one of his social functions as his plus one. He could literally stand in a room full of willing participants and still end up choosing his sister. Something was seriously wrong with him.
"Why?" I asked even though i knew anything i did or said from this point on would be futile. "Just take your assistant or what's so bad about going alone?"
Hah! If looks could kill...
"I'm going to pretend I did not hear that," he ignored me. As much as Alex was labeled as the ultimate billionaire hotshot here in New York, he sure acted far from it- at least around me he did. The limelight was a whole other story. "Now," he glanced at his wrist watch, "you have 20 minutes. Your dress is upstairs. Go!" He dismissed me.
