Tyler
"Tyler calm down! You have to stay in bed!" My mum yelled at me as I raced for the door but Dimitri beat me to it, blocking the exit. This hospital room was suffocating.
"Where is she?" My head was busting and my leg felt heavy from the cast that was wearing it down. It was so difficult to move but I had to get to her.
"Tyler," the tears in my mum's eyes triggered alarm bells in my head. "Please, sweetheart. Just...just sit down. You're hurt."
"Fuck that!" I snapped.
"Tyler!" My dad reprimanded me as if I gave a shit in that moment. "Sit down, son. You've been out of it for quite some time."
What the hell was he talking about?
"How long?" I demanded.
"3 days, man," Dimitri answered.
He focused on the floor rather than looking me in the eye. It took me a while to notice but my mum and dad had the same look splashed across their face. The look of grief. Sorrow. It was unsettling.
"Mum?" I went up to her and held her gaze. She looked...guilty of sorts. She couldn't face me. "Mum?" I yelled louder, gripping her by her shoulders. "Where is she?"
Nothing else mattered to me more than getting to her. I needed to see her like I needed air to breath.
"Tyler, I.. I'm," she couldn't finish before breaking down in tears. My dad was at her side instantly and I watched as she cried into his chest.
"For fuck sake! Can someone tell me what the fuck is going on?!" Anger was too subtle to describe what was brewing in me. "D?" I approached my best friend. "Where is she?!"
"Ty I...I'm so sorry, bro. She didn't..."
"No," it came out as a whisper under my breath.
"Tyler, you saw the car explode. There was no way she could've..."
"But I got her out! S-she was out and...she was okay."
This isn't real. I got her out! I got Kate out.
"Sweetheart, I'm so so so sorry," I felt my mum's hand on my shoulder, trying to navigate me towards the bed.
"I got her out! She was lying next to me a-and...she..." I repeated mindlessly. This has to be some sick joke, right?
"I think he's in shock," I heard my dad's failed attempt to whisper to my mum.
"I'm not in fucking shock, okay?! I got Kate out! There's no way she's dead so cut the shit!" I lost it on them. I was done playing their games.
"Tyler, what are you talking about?" Dimitri asked.
You've gotta be shitting me?!
"This isn't funny! Where the hell is Kate?!"
"Sweetheart? Who's Kate?"
My mum's words sent my world spinning. She couldn't be serious, could she? I backed away from them, heading towards the unguarded door once again.
"Son, I'm so sorry about Steph but I really think you need to get back into the bed. You're in no condition to be out," my dad said.
Wait, what?
Ignoring every aching part of me that pleaded with my brain to return to bed, I left the room. The cast on my leg was weighing me down but I ran/ limped through the entire ward looking for Specs. Every room was occupied by unfamiliar faces. The rest of the trauma wards and the ER had the same results. I stepped into the elevator, with every intention of heading back to my room defeated. I stared at my reflection in the mirrored walls of the elevator as the doors closed. My face was littered with scars. My lip was bust and a bandage accessorized my head.
