"21 hours! Specs, you need to go home," Tyler said from the other end of the phone, sounding rather concerned.
"Yeah, I will. Right now I've got a double organ transplant with my mum. The ER's been packed with casualties today, you're lucky you're not here for this mess," I inform him.
"I've seen my share last night. Look, just promise me you'll go home after the surgery."
I huffed in defeat. I was exhausted, who wouldn't be, but the thought of scrubbing in on a double organ transplant was exhilarating.
Yeah, things like that get me excited.
"Fine. I got to go, I'll call you later," I assured him.
"Okay."
"Bye," with that I hung up and headed straight to OR 6 to scrub in.
The digital clocked that hung on the wall ticked away as my mum, Dr Peters and I worked to implant a new liver and pancreas into our patient. After 3 painstaking hours, the surgery was over and I couldn't wait to get out. I rid myself of the blood stained scrubs and strutted off towards the residents lounge.
It was empty with only the sound of the newly installed fish tank in the corner of the room to keep me company. I shrugged out of my clothes and slipped into a pair of flat pumps, a knee length dress and denim jacket.
"I left, you were here. I come back and you're still here," Javi's voice broke through the silence just as I was about to leave.
I narrowed my eyes at him while murderous thoughts ran through my mind.
"You rubbish," I jabbed his shoulder
"What the hell was that for?" He squealed, rubbing the area where I'd left an indent, looking 50 shades of confused.
"I don't know," I started sarcastically, "maybe it was because you failed to mention to me that you blew off a certain blue eyed blonde who, by the way, I worked hard to convince to go out with you," I exploded.
He scratched the back of his head before explaining, "a patient wrapped in barbed wire came into the ER. What was I supposed to do?"
"Uhmm reschedule with her, duh! Are you even interested at all?"
I swear, I really thought that I saw something between the 2 of them or could I've just been wrong? Maybe it was a one sided interest?
"God, yes! I am," he replied almost immediately.
Turns out, I might wear glasses but I'm not that blind after all.
"Good," I said while my insides were smiling, "then reschedule and don't blow it."
"Yes ma'am," he laughed.
I have no idea when this new side of me evolved. The side where I'm willingly hooking up my friends. I have to admit, I liked this new me. She seemed more open and daring and... happier.
"Now I'm going to head out because I can hear my bed calling to me from here," I went over to him and gripped him in a gentle hug before heading in the direction of the exit.
It was almost 5pm which meant that the traffic would be crazy with everyone heading back home from work. On a usual day I wouldn't mind sitting in traffic but today, that just wasn't going to work. At times like this, I'd take the short cut that most people knew about but usually chose to ignore it. It got me to my apartment in 10 minutes rather than the normal 18.
I pulled out of the parking lot and straight onto the main road. The first right turn got me onto a quiet street with a maximum of 4 cars in sight. With my second left turn, 7 minutes away from my apartment, I noticed a vehicle behind me through my rearview mirror.

Romance"You were worried about me, Specs?" He smirked. "No, Tyler. I hoped that someone cut up your corpse and fed it to paranas. Obviously I was, you idiot! I'm a doctor. Worrying about people is kind of programmed into my system. It's a curse if you ask...
