Damn that egotistical moron!
My level of annoyance peaked as I power walked towards the entrance. I hated being late to anything let alone to my first day at work. Nope, I'm not going to let a stranger spoil a perfectly good day.
The air of St Grace memorial reeked of the medical environment. The reception area was quiet with the exception of a couple of people in the waiting area and the petite red head that worked the computer at the front desk.
Okay, I may have exaggerated my nervousness earlier. I probably made it sound like a sleazy, to high class for your average person hospital. You know, those ones that don't accept you even if you come in bleeding from every orifice of your body just because you have no insurance. No, this place was definitely different.
The atmosphere was warm and welcoming. The little staff that I had seen so far seemed friendly. The certificates of achievements acquired by the hospital hung high and proud on the white walls of the building.
Damnit! I didn't even know which floor I was supposed to be on. Deciding to make use of the receptionist, I approached.
"Excuse me," the red head looked up from her computer screen where she's been typing away frantically. Her name tag read Tracey. She couldn't have been older than 30.
"Hi. May I help you?" She replied with a friendly smile on her face.
"Yes, on which floor will I find the residents lounge?"
"3rd floor, at the end of the lobby, " she answered immediately, sensing the rush in my voice.
"Thank you," I replied as friendly as I could and rushed towards the nearest elevator.
The doors opened and I stepped inside. Slamming the button for the 3rd floor, the doors finally closed and the elevator began to move.
Please don't be mad, please don't be mad.
I chanted it like a mantra in hopes that I don't make a bad first impression. When the doors opened I rushed out and jogged the length of the lobby. The door to the residents lounge was opened and a powerful masculine voice radiated from inside. I creeped my way inside, making sure not to disturb the debriefing, and stood at the back.
There were only 4 other people in the room so I was pretty sure that Dr Peters noticed my lateness but didn't say anything about it. I had met Dr Peters before, when I was accepted to the program. He was the head of the program and Chief of the trauma department. He looked extremely intimidating to everyone who didn't know him but when he spoke, like he was doing now, he was humble and understanding.
I took out my note pad to take down any necessary pointers even though the debriefing was probably almost over. At that point, another intern came through the doors. I would've been smug and slightly thrilled at the fact that I wasn't as late as this person if I was blind and didn't see that poor soul.
Of the billions of people in the world, why! Just why?
Tyler! Of all people! He made his way to stand next to one of the dark haired guys just infront of me. I couldn't believe my eyes. So much for thinking I'm never going to see the guy again. Our eyes connected and I was met with a smug smirk followed by a wink before I eventually peeled my eyes away. What was he doing here?
Uhmm, is his presence making you lose your intellect? I'm pretty sure he's here for the same reason as you.
Well obviously! He just looked way to arrogant and immature to be a doctor of all this. I wouldn't trust a guy like him to have me open on an operating table with my life in his hands.
Don't be so quick to judge the guy. You of all people should know that looks can be deceiving. Take beauty and the beast for example that...
I get it! It was hard to ignore his occasional stares during the remaining 10 minutes of Dr Peters debriefing. What did I ever do to this stupid universe to deserve such cruelty?
"Since today is just observation day, all of you are on my service for the rest of the day," Dr Peters announced. Just great. "Now, get dressed and I'll meet you all in the ER in 30 minutes." That was basically his way of saying class dismissed!
He left the room and each of us went over to our designated lockers. The residents lounge had 4 couches and the walls were painted a cream colour. On one wall were built in cubicles that served as our lockers. There were a total of 3 doors in the room. One led into the room, another into a bathroom and the last one led to the residents on-call room. In our cubicle were our uniforms. Comfortable sneaker looking shoes and navy blue scrubs assigned for the residents with ours and the hospital's name engraved above the left pocket of our Tee's. A pager and stethoscope accompanied our uniforms.
I was dressed in 5. After placing the clothes and shoes that I came in with into my cubicle and slipping on my white coat I was ready to leave but a voice next to me decided otherwise.
"So, are you following me now?" Tyler spoke. I could hear the humor in his voice.
Why couldn't his cubicle be the one furthest away from me or better yet, on another planet altogether. I studied him for a split second, long enough to notice what was engraved on his coat, which he wasn't wearing earlier. Dr. T. Blake. So that's the neanderthals surname.
"Don't flatter yourself." I began walking away but I found him attached to my side like a tail.
Maybe I should've ignored him but that wouldn't have worked. Tyler seemed like the type to take a woman's silence as a challenge to pursue them. The flawed mentally of the species.
"What do you want here?" I asked.
"Uhmm," he glanced around him sarcastically, "the last time I checked, this was a hospital. So, you know, hospital, residency, career, success. You get where I'm going with this Specs?"
He explained it to me like he was talking to a 5 year old. I know, I may have been a bit ambiguous with my question but that's not the point and wait, what did he just call me?
"I mean here. What do you want from me?" I clarified things.
"It's fate, don't you think? You, me, same residency. What are the odds?" He replied joyfully.
I'm sorry, did my face scream enthusiasm? I was about to protest and hit him with a snappy come back that was quickly leaving my brain but he stepped in front of me, blocking my way. He studied me for a second before he spoke again.
"Katherine Grey. Sounds sexy," he stated, holding my ID badge, that was still around my neck, in his hands.
"Tyler Blake," I smacked his hand away, "sounds immature." I snarled.
He looks amused instead of hurt by my gesture. I pushed past him and walked a little fast but my 5'8" and short legs had nothing on his 6'1" freakishly tall self. Okay, I've seen taller but back to the current situation.
"You need an escort to wherever you're going? You could get lost," He tried to be all charming. Maybe it's worked before but not this time.
"If you'd like to stay in this residency, have a career and be a success, I'd suggest that you stay right where you are." I was never one for abuse of power but if push comes to shove...
Please, you're too soft for that!
Just wait and watch. Tyler let the silence wash over and took my advice. I smiled a smug victory smile as I entered the already opened elevator, alone, and hit the button for the 5th floor.

Romance"You were worried about me, Specs?" He smirked. "No, Tyler. I hoped that someone cut up your corpse and fed it to paranas. Obviously I was, you idiot! I'm a doctor. Worrying about people is kind of programmed into my system. It's a curse if you ask...
