Kate
The doors opened on the 5th floor. I had 20 minutes before Dr Peters was expecting us in the ER so I decided to pay someone extremely close to me a visit. The lobby was outrageously long with offices lining it's length. It seemed like forever before I reached the end of it.
The frosted glass door with the chief of surgery sign and alternating glass windows greeted me as I knocked on the door. After 4 knocks the door flew open and infront of me stood a lady whom I've looked up to my whole life. Her slender, as opposed to my curvy, figure stood tall paired with shoulder length chocolate brown hair, a black pencil skirt and matching blouse, 3 inch nude coloured heels and her white doctors coat. She had a heart warming smile plastered across her face and I could see the sparkle in her eyes.
"Hi mum!"
Yes! My mother, Dr Victoria Grey is the Chief of surgery here at St Grace. She is also a major shareholder in this hospital but don't be judging me just yet. It's surprising to most that I've gotten to where I am by myself and not with the favored help of my obviously extremely wealthy mother and brother.
A lot of people judge our family, like they do with most wealthy families, without knowing where we came from. They label us as money lovers and tycoons. It's one reason as to why I only mention my family if the topic comes up.
Like my brother, my mum got to where she is all by herself. Nothing was ever handed to her on a silver platter. This is what made her my role model ever since I was a little girl. She passed on all of her driven and independent traits to my brother and I. It may come as a surprise but I actually got into this residency program without my mother's help. Some people may think of it as nepotism but it doesn't bother me anymore because I know it's not true.
She is a world renowned cardiologist but she didn't just swim in her money. She knew hardship. She ran 3 free clinics in her name. Every year, she'd organise a charity ball and the proceeds would go to different organizations in need. These were the things that made us happy, Alex included as you may have noticed. I loved her immensely and aspired to make as much of a difference as she has made in the medical field.
"Kate!" She wrapped me up enthusiastically in a giant hug filled with pure joy and love. "Come in," she waved me into her office and closed the door behind her.
I took a seat on the couch near the door and she sat next to me. "I won't be long, Dr Peters want us in the ER in 15," I told her.
"He can wait," we both laughed, "how've you been, sweetheart?"
"Good," I replied honestly, "Alex hasn't driven me to the psych ward as yet."
She laughed, "well, don't worry about him anymore. Justin called. He had your stuff taken to the house. You are going to be staying with me right?"
"Yes, but only until I find a place." I assured her. Being 24 and living with your mother seemed kind of awkward for me.
"You don't have to rush." She got up and moved towards her desk. She opened one of the drawers and later returned with something in her hand. "Here," she handed me the spare keys, "I'll be working late on some days, possibly today, so you're going to need this."
"Thanks mum," I took the key when her pager buzzed in her pocket.
"Sweetheart, I'm sorry but I got to go. There's an emergency in the OR."
"It's okay. I should get going as well," we both got off the couch and headed for the door.
"I'll see you later then," she said. I nodded and we both headed in separate directions.
