"Elise? Elise! Where are you?" Ryan called, looking for his younger sister.

He walked into the kitchen. "Do you know where Elise is?" he asked his father.

His father frowned. "No, I don't. Did you check her room?"

"It's locked. I don't know if she's in it or not."

He sighed. "I told her to stop locking that. Here, stir the soup for me and I'll go check."

Ryan nodded, taking his father's place at the stove.

Almost minutes later, he heard sirens. He looked around, wondering what was going on.

His phone buzzed and he checked it, confused.

Dad

Turn off the stove.
I need you to leave
the house, far enough
that you can't see it.

Dad, you're scaring
me. What's wrong?

I just don't want you to
see this. Please, I'll
explain later.

Okay

Ryan turned off the burner, putting on his shoes and heading out of the house. He headed down to the park nearby.

The sirens got louder, and he saw an ambulance pass him.

Headed towards his house.

Me
What happened?? Is that ambulance going to our house???

Dad
If it's passed you, then come back. It'll be gone when you get back.

Ryan headed back to his house, frightened. He stumbled over a tree root that had broken through the sidewalk, having been in a hurry.

He winced as his knee bent in a way he was pretty sure it wasn't supposed to, feeling a sharp pain. He pulled himself up, ignoring how badly it hurt in his rush to get home.

The back doors to the ambulance were shutting when he got back. "Dad! What happened?"

His father had tears streaming down his face. "I don't know how to tell you this... Um, she attempted suicide. I don't know if she was successful yet."

Ryan hardly noticed as he started crying as well. "She what?"

"She left a note and everything. I haven't read it yet. But... I didn't want you to see her. You'd be scarred for life."

Ryan hugged his father, sobbing. He couldn't believe this had happened.
