When Jeff got home, he was still pale and in shock. He hadn't quite comprehended it yet.

"Jeff, honey, what's wrong? Where's Nick?" his mother asked when he walked in the door.

"He's with his family," Jeff said faintly, not moving from the doorway. It was all crashing down on him.

"Wait, the family that hates him?" Sarah asked, twisting around in her seat to look at him.

He nodded weakly. "We lost. We..."

"What do you mean, you lost?" Clara asked worriedly.

He was finally realizing it. Nick's parents had lied, and they won. They had completely lied about everything and they were ruled not guilty.

That wasn't supposed to happen. That... that's not how it works.

"His parents were on trial for– for hurting him. We lost." The words didn't seem to want to leave his mouth. "They lied, they lied about everything, but they won. He told the truth and they lied, but we lost."

-

Sebastian checked his phone, immediately dropping it in shock.

"What's wrong?" Matt asked worriedly.

"Check your phone."

Matt immediately did so, nearly dropping his too.

"What's wrong?" Jason asked, looking over his shoulder.

"Nick lost."

The four fell silent. Matt and Sebastian had already told Jason and Nathan about the trial.

-

"Oh, my god." Kurt dropped his whisk.

He stared at his phone screen, not wanting to believe it.

Nick's family was
declared not guilty.
We lost.

He instinctively called Blaine, not knowing what to do. "Did you see it?"

"I can't believe it. They were telling the truth."

"I hope he's okay."

"God, I didn't even think about that. I wish we could check on him somehow."

"Yeah... I'd call him, but I don't want to get him in trouble, and it's super easy to lie over text."

-

Thad's phone dinged from the other room. Groaning, he lowered his book. "Ryan, can you see if that's important?" He called.

"Check it yourself!"

"Come on, it's two feet away from you!"

Ryan sighed. "You're lucky I love you," he grumbled.

Thad smirked. "Thank you."

"Um, it's from... Is that Latin? It's like... Spin-us triss-tis. Triss tis?"

"Spinus tristis? It's an American Goldfinch."

"Yeah, that. I'm not even going to ask. But it says 'Nick's family was declared not guilty. We lost.'"

Ryan had hardly finished when Thad was in the room, taking the phone.

He read the message over and over again, not wanting to believe in. "Carajo," he whispered, stunned.

"What's wrong?" Ryan asked worriedly.

-

Wes was walking home when David called him. He picked up, laughing. "I literally saw you ten minutes ago."

"Nick lost."

Wes froze in his tracks. "He– he what?"

"His parents won. He lost. It's over." David was crying.

"No. No, it's not over. We're going to do something."
