Wes was trying to calm himself. Friday had come all too soon for his liking.

He took in a deep breath. It was just David. With how he is, his parents must be good people.

Except Sebastian's a good person. His parents were assholes, a voice in his head nagged.

He's an exception.

What about-

Shut up.

"Why do you look so tense?" Chloe asked, walking into the room.

"Just... Kinda nervous. Can you tell Marcus I'm going to a friend's house for dinner when he gets back?"

"Sure."

In what seemed like the blink of an eye, he was there, being introduced to David's parents.

David pulled him aside when his parents left. "Are you okay? You look pale," he asked quietly.

"I'm fine, David," Wes said. He was nervous, but other than that he was fine so far.

When they sat down to dinner, the questions began.

"So, Wes, do you have any hobbies? Anything you like to do?" David's mother had a pleasant southern accent.

David. The thought jumped to Wes's mind so fast that he was afraid he said it out loud but quickly realized he didn't.

I've been hanging out with Jeff too much.

He remembered what David had said about him going all professional around adults and tried to stay casual. "Well, I'm on the Warbler's council with David. I've always loved music. I've also always loved reading, for the same reason, I guess. It's an escape for reality. Other than that I'm too focused on my grades to do things."

She nodded. "You don't overwork yourself though, do you? You always need breaks now and then."

Wes blinked, confused. He thought he had prepared himself for any scenario. Never in his life had an adult given him that message.

David chuckled, coming to his rescue by responding. "With all the crazy that happens there, it's not possible." He looked over at him. "Although if it was possible, you probably would," he teased.

He blushed. "I don't get overworked, just prepared."

"Mhm. Whatever you say."

They all laughed, Wes feeling rather light. Things were going well.

For once, they continued to go well the rest of the night.
