I know that Matt wanted to find a way to arrest Fisk, but it was clear to me that was never going to happen. The longer I let Matt try and convince me it was possible, the more people were going to die. That's why I was out tonight without him looking for Fisk. I was finally going to finish this before Fisk was able to hurt any more innocent people. I had been out for over four hours now, following leads that lead nowhere. Finally, one panned out, and I found Leland. After beating on a looser enough, I got him to tell me that Leland was going to meet with Fisk tonight.
I looked down into the ally to see Leland was meeting with Fisk. As I looked at the two of them, my blood started to boil. Leland led me right to Fisk. He was standing there; all I had to do was jump down and end him.
"Senator Cherry's cleared the last of the zoning hurdles...after squeezing us for another extra 10%. Bright sides, you'll be able to build whatever you want on your properties now. Everyones been paid off, everyone's on board. But we will need to find a replacement for Gao's heroin trade, without it, we might have some off the books cash flow issues down the road." Leland told him.
I could not help but feel a little relieved knowing that Gao was out of the picture. For at least now, I did not have to worry about her coming after me. I now could focus on Fisk.
"What's the word on what happened with her?" Fisk asked, and even though I wanted to jump down and slit his throat, I wanted to hear Leland's answer.
"Looks like she's in the wind. Wouldn't have expected it but maybe shes, not the ally we thought she was." Leland told him.
"Maybe she's not," Fisk responded as he pulled out a piece of paper from his jacket pocket.
"What's that?" Leland asked.
"I asked Wesley to transfer funds from the night before we found him," Fisk told him.
"I though financials was my job?" Leland asked him.
"Yes, that's why I wanted you to have a look at these. There seem to be some irregularities with my accounts." Fisk told him.
"Of course, there are. I move maoney around all the time. A shell game to keep the SEC off our backs, its nothing." He told him as he handed him back the papers and I was starting to hope maybe the two of them would kill each other, and I would not have to get my hands dirty and then Matt would have no reason to be mad at me.
"Your hands are shaking," Fisk told Leland.
"Cause its freezing out here." Leland lied.
"Then why are you sweating, Leland?" Fisk asked.
"All right, okay. Jesus. I figured youd find out sooner ot later. Whats a guy gonna do?" Leland asked Fisk.
"Wesley found out, didn't he?" He confronted you...and you shot him." Fisk told Leland.
"I have no idea what happened to Wesley. I wasn't a part of that." Leland told Fisk.
"But you had something to do with the benefit, didn't you? You and Gao? She's gone, you're stealing from me." Fisk yelled at him.
"It's not what you think," Leland said, trying to defend himself.
"You tried to kill me!" Fisk yelled.
"The poisonings at the benefit were just to make it look like someone was trying to kill you. But you were never the target." Leland told him.
"Venessa?" He asked.
"Do you blame us? Just look at whats happened since you took up with her. You've been distracted, emotional, erratic. We just wanted to nugde you back on track. But...obviously that went south, so...we will be parting ways...and I'll be taking half your assets with me." He told him with a confidence I have never seen in Leland before.
"You think that I would let you walk away after what you told me what you've done?" Fisk yelled at him.
"That's exactly what you're gonna do because I have Detective Hoffman. Hoffmen never left the city after he murdered his partner in the hospital. I scooped him up, squrreled him away for a rainy day. If I don't check every twenty-four hours...Hoffman gets dropped off to the Feds...tells the all the shit he's been up to." Leland told Fisk, and instantly, my stomach dropped.
If Hoffman were still alive, then we would have a way to take down Fisk how Matt wanted to. If I killed Fisk now our problems would be over, but Matt would never forgive me, especially if we could do things his way.
Shit, I hate you, Matt, right now.
"Hoffman, he's ...he's a frightened little worm. He would never risk going against me." Fisk responded confidently.
"Ten million buys a lot of courage. He thinks he's going into witness protection, get the money on the other side. Now, I know you'll get to him before he cashes in, but by then the damage will already have been done...and everything you've been fighting so hard for will come tumbling down." Leland said to Fisk.
"Yeah, but you would get caught up in that as well." Fisk reminded him.
"I've spent my entire life...hiding assets overseas for pricks like you. My son and I will be just another tansaction, disappearing into tu tox- exempt eithrt. But I'm a fair sort. That's why I'm only taking half your money. You go your way. I go mine. Not what I'd call win-win...but its as close as we're gonna get with this. So...we on the same page?" Leland asked.
"I, uh...No!...I don't think we are." Fisk said for a second seeming lost for words.
That quickly changed when he punched Leland in the face.
Fisk tried to grab him, but Leland pulled out a taser out of his jacket and tazed him in the neck. Fisk screamed out as he pushed Leland away from him.
"You hurt her!" Fisk yelled out as he stomped his way towards Leland.
"Wait! Wait!" Leland yelled out as his hands in surrender.
"You hurt Vanessa!" Fisk yelled out as he grabbed hold of Leland's jacket, and I almost felt bad for him.
Almost before I remembered all the bad shit he did to the people I care about. Then that speck of pitty flipped and was replaced with anger, and I found myself wishing Vanessa had died. She didn't deserve to live when she loved a monster like him. I watched as Fisk threw Leland into the door to whatever building they were standing behind. I moved a little closer to them, trying to get a better view. I could not hope that the two of them would kill each other and do my job for me.
"Sweep the city. Find Hoffman and put a bullet in his head." Fisk told his men.
"Shit," I mumbled softly.
I knew I could not let his men find Hoffman. This was the break that Matt had been looking for. I had to tell Matt what I overheard tonight because if I didn't, I would probably lose him as well. He would never forgive me if there were a way to arrest Fisk, and I did not tell him. So I took off running from rooftop to rooftop with one goal in mind. Find Matt, then find Hoffman.
