My heart stopped when Ezekiel wasn't in bed when I woke up and I checked the time. "It's too early for him to leave..." I padded down the stairs and a smile graced my lips. He was cooking what looked to be a large breakfast. I leaned against the doorframe to watch him concentrate.
He jumped when he saw me, nearly spilling pancake batter, but I caught it. "Can you actually cook?"
He gaped. "Are you doubting my culinary skills?"
I raised my eyebrows. "With the pancakes nearly only fire, yes, very much so." He whipped around and I giggled. "Just kidding..."
He huffed and flipped them, trying to hide his amusement. "Not funny."
I slid onto the counter, out of his work space. "Was to me, your face was priceless Mr. Valencia."
He rolled his eyes. "So, what is your last name?"
I paused at the question. "Why?"
He turned, now more curious. "Just asking, but you don't have to tell me if you don't want to."
I pursed my lips. "I don't have one any more..."
He blinked. "What?"
I lowered my gaze. "Got rid of it when we left... it was Montgomery before, Xander's last name, but I wanted nothing to do with any of my parental figures, so now I don't have one."
He nodded. "Okay... your middle name."
"Xeneva."
He smiled at that. "That's pretty... Violet Xeneva..."
I rolled my eyes. "I guess..."
He chuckled. "Not going to ask mine?"
I smirked. "No, Micheal. I don't need to."
His head whipped around. "How the fuck?"
"Graduation. You looked nice by the way, had a grey tie and everything."
He apparently could no longer focus because he removed the pancakes and turned off the stove. "You were there?"
I shrugged. "I was around."
He tilted his head as he came to stand between my legs. "How?"
I pulled him closer with them. "Funny thing about people who think they are safe. They never look up."
He thought for a moment and frowned. "The rafters, Violet that was dangerous."
I sighed. "I am yet alive Ezekiel and I saw you graduate. All good things, though it wouldn't have killed you to be a little less sad."
He averted his gaze. "Yeah... wasn't exactly in a good mood at that time... or any time really."
I stroked his face. "I know."
He narrowed his eyes. "You sure do know a lot."
I smirked. "When you have biweekly check ins, it tends to happen."
His eyes widened. "From..."
"Now, you know I can't tell all of my secrets."
His phone rang as he was about to respond. He rolled his eyes as he checked who it was. "Hello?" I heard a woman's voice. "I'm not there yet... yes, Mother." He turned away from me and I couldn't help, but smile. "Yeah... I am well aware. Love you too."
He hung up and faced me again. Once again he was interrupted because my phone rang. I didn't bother checking the caller ID. "Good morning, Mrs. Valencia, timely as always."
