I sighed as someone knocked, I got the bare minimum details about her dress, all I knew that it would look very gothic though graceful. "Come in."
Violet fell silent, having returned to her office, as I frowned. "I just wanted to talk."
I sat back, phone still to my ear. "How can I help you, Brenda?"
She approached the desk. "Uh... I was wondering if you have plans for the weekend?"
"Nope, you're all free." Of course she would make a game of this.
I smirked. "I do actually."
"Liar."
I tried to control my face. "Oh, well do you have a date. There's this banquet..."
"No, he is dateless and alone."
I chuckled. "I will hang up on you."
Violet giggled. "I dare you to. Am I the only one that uses speaker phone?"
Brenda paused as though I didn't blatantly have a phone held to my face. "I'm sorry, who are you talking to?"
"Only the girl that you absolutely despise."
I shook my head. "Will you behave?"
"Thought you were hanging up."
I rubbed my face. "My answer doesn't change, I'm not interested."
Brenda frowned. "I heard you were with her this weekend."
Violet giggled again. "Have the rumors started already?"
I pursed my lips. "I'll put you on speaker phone instead."
"I call your bluff."
She was turning red. "I'm talking to you, is it true?"
I held my tongue between my teeth, debating. "Depends on who her is... and it's none of your concern. You need to move on from this fantasy of yours."
"Are you afraid to tell her?"
Brenda rounded the desk and took the phone. "Who is this?" I dropped my head, waiting to see how Violet would respond. "Hello?"
I took the phone back as she was seething. "And you call me afraid."
She sighed. "No need for me to waste words, besides somebody likes when I don't talk to others."
I chuckled. "This is true. You can go, Brenda. My answer is no."
She leaned over me putting her hands on the armrest. "You've changed..."
I leaned back in disgust. "Find someone else."
"She sounds awfully close... wanna call me back while she attends to your needs?"
I couldn't manage being pissed with Violet teasing me. "I suggest you leave."
She leaned closer. "She left you, Ezekiel... with your child if my suspicions are correct."
Violet laughed, damn if it didn't make my heart flutter. "That's really none of your business." I managed to put an ounce of authority into my voice. "Get out."
She moved back automatically and I could breathe. "You didn't deny it."
Violet was dying of laughter. "They... think... we..."
I dropped my head, shaking trying to contain my own. "You're not helping."
She tried to stop, but another peel of laughter burst out. "Hold... on..."
I heard her put distance between herself and the phone, then someone come in. "Violet, what the..." She must have been signing because I didn't hear her. "She said put it on speaker if she's still there. Who is she?"
"She's not."
"Violet, what the hell?" Only thing that could be heard was her laughing, then Aurora joined her. "Okay. I'm leaving now."
I joined them as my office door closed. Her laughter was contagious, it warmed my chest to the point that I couldn't dispell the rumor in that moment if I tried. Finally, she got it together and returned to the phone. "My stomach hurts, damn you."
I took a breath to try to stop. "This doesn't bother you?"
She sighed. "I don't have time to worry about idle gossip and lies. Notice I've done nothing to end the rumors about having a child..."
I nodded. "True, but if you come as my date to the ball..."
She giggled. "Still better than Xavier or Nic. You should worry about your reputation. I care little for mine."
I sighed. "I'm good. So, Friday?"
"I will be performing."
"So not my date?"
She hummed. "We'll see how I feel Friday."
