"I'm down to my last bullet, so who wants to try it?"
When they heard what he said, the crowd quieted down again. They have not lost control completely and they know that the first one who goes will die.
If it is true that the Infected can be crazier than normal people, then why are they unwilling to fight the military police with only sticks and stones.
They may be ready to fight to the death but that doesn't mean they want to forfeit their life.
At least, they don't want to exchange their lives with a single bullet.
And to be killed by a vet of all people.
(What a way to die.) he chuckles to himself.
So, they only try to push their neighbours forward, saying things like "He only has one bullet left. Don't be afraid,"
But none of them wants to go.
Perhaps, their leader's death made them doubt their riot. They are confused, uncertain, which makes it harder for them to pay the ultimate price.
And so, this is what is happening in the Third Hospital in Chernobog.
A vet covered in blood uses his last bullet to stop more than ten thugs. Even after his cigarette burnt out, nobody steps forward.
This is what Lin Yie wants.
In his eyes, these Infected may be rioters, but they are nothing more than thugs.
They remind him of the hooligans he saw in middle school. Those youngsters would smoked cheap cigarettes, pretended to be cool, and flirted with girls but when the guards came, they became spineless cowards.
The biggest difference between these Infected and the hooligans in his memory is that he only thinks hooligans look crazy but he knows these Infected are actually sick and really becoming crazy.
Still, compared to the ones who have lost control completely or the violent people who have given up everything to fight against society, these Infected are just bullies at most. He only needs to take their leader out and act crazier than them.
And soon, they will break up themselves.
So far, things have progressed the way he expected. After some quarrels, no one steps up to confront him.
After a while, a man goes and left.
Just like an hourglass, when the first grain of sand falls, the others follow. One brings two, two brings four, and four brings eight.
After Elan left, the other Infected are not willing to be involved with the rioters. Why would you want to follow someone that can't even beat a vet?
After some hesitation, they help one another out and leave. The younger people help some children and elderly to stand up and guide them out.
When they gave things some thoughts, they would know riots are the worst choice they could make as to right.
They will at least get to keep their lives if they get quarantined but if they fight the military police, they will die in action without a doubt.
Soon, half of the Infected in the corridor left.
When he sees this, Lin Yie is relieved. Even though he acts like a lunatic, he is still very much afraid of death.
After all, he did die once, once is enough for him thank you very much.
Especially after coming into contact with Rhodes Island... In other words, he is about to start a new chapter in his life.
The gloominess of waiting two years is about to be gone. Sunlight pierces through the dark clouds. There are so many metaphors he can think of that can describe how he feels right now. Even if he is not good at expressing himself, he still feels like a poet.
Then, another gunshot.
It just happened like that.
Like thunder at night.
An Infected who was about to leave suddenly had his brain blown out. His body still maintains the forward position, but it staggers before collapsing onto someone in front.
Lin Yie is shocked.
He didn't fire the shot. His last bullet is still in his gun but as the "only" one with a gun, he becomes the centre of attention again.
He can feel their stares and the anger and irritation in them.
He raises his hands immediately, "That wasn't me!"
However, someone yells, "He is out of bullets! Kill him!" He follows the voice and sees a thin man hiding a black pistol in his coat. That guy smiles at him with yellow teeth before leaving.
"It was him..." Lin Yin points at that man, but it's futile. He can't defend himself in front of a mob.
Gunshot and blood have robbed the Infected of their conscience. They didn't notice the man who fired the shot. Instead, they focus solely on their "only" enemy.
"He is out of bullets!"
Thugs have turned into rioters. With axes and steel rods, they rush forward. Even those Infected who should have left are back. Suddenly, a haven for patients turns into hell.
"F***!" Lin Yie curses. He wants to tear that man into a new, but it's pointless. That man already left. He can only fire the last bullet into one of the Infected.
Then, he is really out of bullets, and there are many more who want to kill him.
At this moment, Lin Yie has to show them what he is made of with his karate.
Because his health was poor when he was a kid, his parents forced him to practice Karate, and he spent two years in a dojo. He still remembers some techniques from back then.
Facing the mob, Lin Yie makes a pose and yells, "Ha!"
Like a true martial artist.
Then...
He got knocked out, his nose is broken.
He feels dizzy. Perhaps, he is really at his limit. He can only watch an Infected swing an axe at him, towards his brain.
Suddenly, a white silhouette stands in front of him, and at the same time, a long.... tail?
Lin Yie is falling unconscious. He can't stand up anymore, but before he collapses, he intuitively reaches out, as if he wants to grasp something, and so, he grips the furry tail.
The next thing he sees are those golden eyes with flames burning in them look at him.
(What a gorgeous... furry?)
That is his last thought before he feels something hit his head, hard. Still really confuse he goes out like a nightlight.
