Yato hears Lin Yie's voice and looks at him.
"Dr. Lin?"
Yato waits for Lin Yie in front of the elevator.
"What's up?"
"Uh." Lin Yie asks, "How's your injury?"
"It wasn't serious. I am fine now."
"Did that W really escape?"
"Yes." Yato says, "She's very strong. I couldn't stop her. After wounding me, she blew up the escape tunnel and escaped alone. She didn't bring her subordinates with her. Maybe they were just pawns to be forsaken after her mission. However, her people seemed to know that, and they still protected her till the end. That was why the L.G.D. couldn't catch that W."
"What a crazy organization." Lin Yie scratches his head in frustration, "Thank you for saving us back there. We would have died if you didn't show up."
Yato shakes her head, "No need to thank me. Fighters are supposed to protect the medics anyway. On the other hand, you fought till the last moment, even though you are not a fighter. That really surprised me. You have my respect."
Lin Yie feels embarrassed. He was obviously pushed into a corner with no way to fight back, not to mention he almost died, but she made it sound like a good thing.
"Uh. I guess."
He actually has something to ask her, but now he doesn't know how to start. Yato sees his hesitation and asks, "Is there anything else?"
"Um, yes." Lin Yie looks at the black sword on her waist and asks, "I saw your swordsmanship, so I wanted to ask where you learned how to use a sword. Can you teach me?"
Yato is surprised, "You what?"
"Uh, do I need to clarify?"
"Oh, not that." Yato shakes her head, "I was just sur... Do you mean you want to learn how to use a sword from me? Aren't you a medic?"
"I am a vet at most, even though I am a psychologist right now." Lin Yie coughs, "But I... uh, still want to learn more. Having more skills will always be beneficial after all."
Yato looks at Lin Yie through her mask. She chuckles, "Really? Why did you ask me then?"
"Because I saw your swordsmanship." Lin Yie says, "You are strong."
"You just haven't seen others'."
"Experiences don't translate to strength in Rhodes Island." Yato continues, "Rhodes Island doesn't lack fighters. We lack someone like you. I heard about you from Kal'tsit. If your ability is real, you will inevitably become one of the most important people in Rhodes Island. There is no need for you to learn how to fight."
Yato turns around, "However, if someone wants to hold a sword, nothing should be able to stop him."
Lin Yie pauses.
Yato unsheaths her sword. The light blue edges of the dark blade cut through wind easily.
"Do you really want to learn the way of the sword?" Yato asks, "I am asking you a serious question."
Lin Yie takes a deep breath and nods seriously.
"Yes."
"We Oni's can see through people's hearts." Yato says, "Your determination is not the firmest, but it passed the minimum requirement."
Lin Yie is relieved, even though something feels off.
"Still, I have to remind you." Yato says, "Do you know the most important quality of a fighter?"
"Yes." Lin Yie says seriously, "It's effort."
"No." Yato shakes her head, "It's talent."
Lin Yie pauses, not sure if he heard it right.
"It's talent," Yato repeats. She says, "It includes your innate talent and your racial talent. Effort... I admit effort is also very important, but..." Yato lowers her voice, "In my case, I know I won't catch up with some people, no matter how many years I train. And there are people who will never catch up with me. Do you understand?"
Lin Yie is speechless. Her words just shattered the outlook he brought over from the other world. After all, he grew up with the proverb: 30% talent and 70% effort, and effort can make up for talent. Yato just straight up told him that effort will not make up for the differences in talents.
"I am not trying to discourage you." Yato says, "Even if you manage to learn everything I know, you will still see there are many more things you can't do. In spite of that, do you still want to learn from me?"
Yato shows Lin Yie her sword's handle. He looks at it. Without touching the sword, he can already tell it is not light. After some hesitation, he takes the sword. As expected, it is heavy.
"Um. I know there are things I still won't be able to do after learning how to use a sword." Lin Yie scratches his head, "But there are things I have to do, right?"
After saying that, Lin Yie feels that what he said was a bit cringy, so he rephrases his words.
"Actually, I didn't think much. I just want to be able to do something besides running away, when I get attacked again."
"Really?" Yato chuckles, "If you made up your mind." She shealthes the sword and gives it to Lin Yie. "Take it."
"Uh..."
"Don't worry." Yato says, "Training with me is very tough. If you want to give up, just return it to me."
Lin Yie smiles bitterly as he takes the sword, "You won't get the sword back then."
"I hope so." Yato enters the elevator.
Lin Yie looks at the sword in his hands. From now on, the vet will learn how to use a sword!
