56 - CRUSHING HARD, OR HARDLY CRUSHING?

(FRISK POV)

Chara grabbed two water bottles and walked out. I tried to hit one of Undyne's strike pads, but I missed.
"Man, now I feel bad for laughing."
"Oh, Chara? She's fine. If she said she just needs some fresh air, I trust her."
"Wow, you- ungh, nice hit- guys have such a nice bond."
"thanks- well, it's taken a long time to get to where we are. A lot of emotional growth and self-discovery and all that." It's kind of hard to talk in between breaths.
"Really?" I swung with a left hook, and Undyne was able to block it.
"Yeah, we both learned that We have the same cosmic deity that is hellbent on the destruction of the universe residing in our SOULs that give us the ability to warp reality. So there's that."
"..."
"...it's complicated."
"That sounds like some anime shit."
"It would be a lot cooler if it wasn't trying to, you know-" I dodged a hit from Undyne. "Destroy the universe."
"Of course."
"Okay, break time." I grabbed a towel and a water bottle and sat down. "You know, Undyne?"
"Hmm?"
"Other than Chara, you are one of the only people I feel I can open up to."
"Really? Even though I was not only racist to you, but also tried to actually kill you multiple times?" I shrugged.
"Happens more often than you think, which is why I asked you to train me in self defense."
"Speaking of which, when blocking, you want to block the attacker's wrist with your wrist, and then get a few quick shots to the face or gut."
"Right."
"And when you do block, you want to make sure your wrist is above your elbow, your elbow is above your shoulder, and your chin is down."
"Noted."
"So back to what you were saying?"
"So yeah, I don't know if it's weird, but I kinda see you as like, an older sister of sorts." She laughed at the idea.
"AHAHAHA, me? An older sister? No offense, but I don't really think I'm quite family material." I remembered back at Alphys's lab when Mettaton pointed out Alphys had a crush on Undyne.
"Who knows, one day, you might find yourself in more of a family than you think."
"I... doubt that." I threw the empty water bottle away and grabbed a new one.
"So. When did you first meet Dr. Alphys?" Undyne paused for a brief moment.
"Dr. Alphys? We met in the Dump area under the Waterfall City bridge. I was looking for cool swords when I saw her... uh... standing there, staring into the abyss. She looked pretty... uh... contemplative."
"I know the feeling." For the first time since we met, Undyne didn't have this 'ultra warrior aura' about her. Right now, she felt emotional. Vulnerable, even. Like this really did mean a lot to her.
"S-So I walked up and asked her where I thought the abyss led to! She looked at me, shocked, and went red in the face. But, I'm scary so I'm used to all that stuff! She said that it was probably a negative space zone, and that, if you were to fall in, you would be sent to a different reality. One where, you wouldn't have the same problems. Or maybe not even be the same thing. She also went on about countless other theories of hours. I was so captivated... but... one thing she said stuck with me. She said that it was probably a place where all the things and people who have been forgotten go to disappear forever."
"That's... really depressing, actually." Undyne sighed.
"Yeah... I told her to get away from the edge, so that she wouldn't slip. She was pretty reluctant. Ever since then, we meet up there sometimes by accident... I really like talking to her. She has so many interesting things to say, and she's so smart, too! She has this love of anime. She actually introduced me to it! She has this smile when she talks about the things she enjoys, and it makes me want to smile too! I really like spending time with her. And.. she is so brave, being the Royal scientist. She just, doesn't think highly of herself. And that makes me... kinda sad, you know?" Undyne looked over at me, her face turning a bright shade of red. "What's with that look, punk?!"
"Oh my god, that's so adorable!"
"W-What is?"
"You totally have a crush on Alphys."
"What!? I do not!"
"I felt the same way about Chara before we were together."
      "No, it's not... it's not like that, I'm..."
     "Undyne. Are you really sure that you don't feel that way towards her?"
     "......NGAHH!! ENOUGH TALKING ABOUT FEELINGS!!! WEVE GOT SERIOUS WORK TO DO BEFORE YOURE COMBAT READY, PUNK!!" We stood back up and got back to training. After a few minutes, Chara walked back in to the room. Her gaze felt... empty, in a way.
     "Chara? You okay?" She walked up to me with her head down.
     "...frisk? i need a hug."
