26 - SCIENCE WITH SANS

[FRISK POV]

      "alright kid, so you can 'see' words. what do our words look like?" I thumbed through the book, giving quick glances up and down to the two skeleton brothers in an attempt to discern their speech.
"Yours is... Comic Sans, big surprise... And Papyrus is, well, Papyrus."
"FITTING!"
"This is very anti-climactic." sans shrugged. I looked through more of the book, trying to see any fonts I recognized. "Chara speaks in Kara Kaboodle, that's hilarious... but everyone else just uses something called... 8bitoperator. Why's that?" sans let out a sigh.
      "welp, usually i would be too lazy to explain, but DARK magic holds a special place in my SOUL."
      "DARK magic?" sans rolled his 'eyes'
      "no, not in the way you're thinking. let me start at the beginning." sans cleared his throat and started speaking in a font I didn't recognize.

     "Long ago, two races ruled the earth. Humans, and Monsters. Most, if not all humans depend on LIGHT magic to survive. LIGHT Monsters are even made out of the stuff! But there are two types of monsters. Those who are made out of LIGHT magic..."
      "And those who are made out of DARK magic." I said. sans nodded.
     "Yes, very good. LIGHT magic is also called Color magic, and we use it all the time. Blue magic is spacial manipulation, like gravity and telekinesis," Ive felt blue magic before, when I fought Papyrus. He made my gravity relative to the shed. "Light blue magic is stillness or calmness. It is used to ease the mind, or to keep someone in place; if you move while touching it, you take damage. Yellow magic is for balance. It is normally used for the sharing of magical techniques, or for judging truth. Green magic is for protection and barriers. This can be used in conjunction with yellow magic to give someone a shield, or with light blue to lock them in place," I remember. In my fight with Undyne, she used green magic to make me block the attacks. There's no way I could've done that with a normal spear! "I can see you're getting bored, kiddo, but trust me this will all make sense in a minute. *ahem* Light green magic is used for healing. You can use it to see what's wrong with someone (at least from a physiological standpoint) or to mend wounds. Orange magic is based on momentum. It can be applied to increase velocity, but at a cost. You see, if someone who is touching activated orange magic stops moving, even for a second, they will get hurt. It's like, the opposite of light blue magic. Purple magic is entity manipulation. Teleportation, conjuring items, etc. It can also be used with yellow magic to show people knowledge, but that's an advanced move, or with light blue to affect time, I'm the only one I know with that power... There's one more type of color magic..." sans wavered in his words. "Red magic... only one type of person can use red magic."
      "...And what kind of person is that?" He looked up at me.
      "A very determined person. Only those with insanely high amounts of DETERMINATION can use it. It has the power to manipulate reality. The very laws of this universe. SAVEing LOADing..." He made eye contact with me, it felt like he was staring into my SOUL. "RESETing. Hell, if a red magic user wanted to, they could increase the damage they do like it was some sort of... computer code just waiting to be altered to the programmers will. They could kill anyone and everyone with one hit." I knew what sans was talking about. He remembered how I murdered every monster. I must have been using red magic without even noticing it. I even use it all the time, every time I SAVE at those mysterious shards. "Everyone has at least a little DETERMINATION in them. Just enough to stay anchored to reality. But some people have enough to anchor reality to them." The room was filled with an awkward silence.
     "sans. Earlier you said that there were two types of magic. But you only explained one."
      "Right. DARK magic works very different then LIGHT magic. DARK magic, and subsequently DARK monsters, are fueled by sentimentality. You've stayed with us long enough, and developed such a bond with magic and it's users that you have a subconscious understanding of DARK magic. Seeing people's words and fonts is a trait of DARK magic. Skeletons are partially made of DARK magic, too. This is why DARK magic is so finicky. While LIGHT magic has clear rules, DARK magic is based off the idea of DARK magic. Your 6th sense is DARK magic too." I sat up. My jaw was wide open like a cartoon. "You have an aptitude for magic. So much so that you can see with it. Though, now that I'm looking at it, your SOUL isn't unlocked, so you can't cast magic actively, that's a bummer."
"What do you mean?"
"Well, Monster SOULs are 'unlocked' or 'upside down' as you would call it. So we can cast magic, but yours is not... so you can't. It's pretty self-explanatory." I sat still for a while.
"This is a lot to take in... Also, for the last hour or so you have been speaking with normal grammar and a font I don't recognize. With hands and stuff."
"family trait, don't worry about it."
"Speaking of which, where are these 'DARK monsters'? I don't see any of them around."
"im not good with history. you should go ask my buddy gerson boom over in waterfall. he can tell you about all that." I looked at my phone. This Gerson fellow is only a few hours away, but its pretty late. I'll start in the morning.
"Well, thanks for all the hospitality, and the science lesson, but I won't take much more of your time. Have a good night you two!" Papyrus shot me a huge smile.
"THANK YOU FOR DINNER I LEARNED A LOT! COME AGAIN SOON HUMAN!!!" I closed the door behind me. I thought back to what sans said. Red magic. That rings a bell, I've heard about it before. Wait. The River person! He mentioned that 'it's bad to trust in red magic.' In a sense, they're right. I can't always rely on red magic to get me out of trouble. But sans said my soul is locked, so why can I SAVE and LOAD at will? I have a strange feeling that my powers aren't all what they seem...
