Slam. The metal door swung closed, inches away from trapping the blonde's fingers between the gap. She jumped quickly pulling her hand back, turning her head to see none other than Veronica Lodge stood there with a simple smirk on her face.
"Betty Cooper, looking...preppy as usual" the raven haired girl commented, fiddling with her pearls that Betty assumed had been gifted by her fraudulent father. She sighed holding back every insult that she dreamed off throwing at the girl, instead forming her fake smile.
"Can I help you?" she asked, kind as always even to people she'd rather cut off forever. Before Veronica could reply, she felt a pair of arms wrap around her, the same pair of arms that Betty once found comfort in. Jughead Jones, serpent king to be and Betty's former best friend/crush.
"Hey Ronnie" the boy grinned, kissing her cheek as she tilted her head up. Watching the scene play out before her made Betty want to cry and shout all at the same time, standing their awkwardly in the presence of the couple.
"Oh, hey Betty" Jughead smiled with a quick nod, his arm resting over Veronica's shoulder. Their interaction had become limited; small nods in the halls or weak smiles sat across from each other in class. She nodded at him before turning around, breathing deeply as she began to walk away.
"Betty wait up!" Jughead called out, ignoring his girlfriend's scoff as he jogged over to her. "There's a party tonight at Veronica's, you should come"
"Oh um I'm not sure that's a good idea, plus it's a school night" she politely declined, shaking her head that ached from the high ponytail she wore.
"Please, for me. It'll be fun, and we haven't spoken in a while" he shrugged, his charming smile making it so difficult for her to refuse him. The blonde wanted to be rude, sarcastic; tell him that it was his fault but she didn't have the confidence. Instead an effortless reply formed from her lips "I'll think about it"
That night she sat on her bed, notes spread all around her as she completed her chemistry homework that was due the next Monday. Her phone was propped up against her headboard so she could see Kevin "B you have to go, he wouldn't invite you if he didn't want you there. This has to be a sign!"
"He's with Veronica, he made up his mind Kev" Betty sighed, biting down on her lip as she placed her pen down.
"So what? That bitch has already taken enough from you, you owe her nothing. I need my wing woman anyway" Kevin grinned, running a comb through his hair.
"I need something to wear" she murmured, wincing at the excitable screech she got through the phone.
"So that means your coming! Okay I will pick you up in an hour" he instructed, making her show him all her outfit options. Eventually they decided on a pink lace dress with simple pink flats, her hair in loose curls and her favourite lip-gloss.
"You look beautiful B, I'll head towards yours now. See you soon" he grinned, her blowing a kiss before ending the call. She giggled happily as she twirled around in the mirror, feeling like this could be a night to remember.
It wasn't exactly thrilling to stand at the drinks table and watch Kevin chat up 5 boys in the space of 20 minutes but Betty didn't seem to mind, taking small sips of whatever concoction that had been given to her. She found the whole party atmosphere practically disgusting with nothing but sweaty drunk teenagers making out or stupidly 'dancing' (which was more just stumbling around). Her unfortunate disgust led to her sitting in the back garden on the patio steps, taking in the fresh air and lack of people around.
"Hey" a voice sounded from behind her, turning her head to see Jughead sit down next to her. "I was wondering if you came"
"Kevin convinced me" she explained, barely meeting his gaze. He wore his usual combo of a serpent jacket and plain t-shirt, paired with his black jeans. His curls were frantic and barely tamed as usual, something she always adored.
"Are you at least enjoying yourself?" he asked, sipping a can of coke. She was definitely tipsy but she already knew he wasn't the slightest bit drunk. Jughead had always confided in her about his dad and that he'd avoid drinking in any situation now as a result of his childhood.
"Well I'm sat in the cold drinking some unknown alcoholic drink whilst my friend hits up other guys so...I guess" she joked shaking her head. He chuckled at her and nodded in understanding.
"Sounds like a perfect night to me" he joked back, nudging her. She giggled placing the solo cup down, feeling slightly light-headed.
"Why did you invite me?" she questioned out of the blue, turning to face him properly as she tucked her hair behind her ear. She could visibly see the pause he took, eyes finally meeting hers.
"It was a chance to talk to you again, believe it or not I've missed you Cooper" he grinned, placing his coke can down.
"I've missed you too...when it was just us" she admitted shyly, heart racing faster than it ever had before. He chuckled at that, reaching forward to tuck her hair back as she had failed the first time.
"They were the good times huh?" he recalled, hand falling back down to his drink. She nodded with a sincere smile, wishing she could turn back the clock with a click of her fingers.
"Jughead!" the loud call interrupted them, both turning to see Veronica beckoning him over. His eyes switched between the two girls, Betty's face quickly dropping.
"What are you doing out here?" Veronica asked walking towards them, gesturing for her boyfriend to get up. He stood up and grabbed his drink reluctantly, causing Betty to scoff.
"Do you have a problem?" Veronica asked when she heard, raising an eyebrow. Any other time Betty would've shaken her head and pressed down the truth. Whether it was the influence of alccohol or the rude interruption, she didn't know but something set off a trigger in her.
"Yeah I do actually. You" she murmured, getting up. Veronica crossed her arms, stepping forward.
"Don't try me Cooper, this is my party"
"Of course it is, because your precious daddy let you have one to make up for yet another scam" Betty spat out, squaring up to her. A crowd quickly formed around the two girls, shocked that a girl like Betty was going up against the popular Lodge girl.
"Excuse me? Who the hell do you think you are?!" Veronica shrieked with a face of horror.
"The girl you stole everything from. You're nothing but a stone cold bitch, a typical Lodge. Go to hell" Betty raged, throwing her unknown drink in the girl's face without even thinking. Everyone gasped at the motion, watching as Betty ran past them all straight after.
"Go away Jughead" she mumbled as he caught up to her, flinching when he grabbed her arm.
"What the fuck was that about?" he asked angrily but also just in pure shock.
"Are you really asking me that? That was a wake up call that she needed, and maybe you do too. You're the one fooling around with some rich bitch" she snarled.
"Betty this isn't you, come on what's up?" he pressed trying to reason with her.
"I'm sorry since when did you 'know' me? We don't speak anymore, we aren't close so don't think you suddenly know me so well. Maybe this is me, maybe I'm sick of being the nice girl" she snapped.
"Betty she's just-"
"No Jug I don't want to hear it. I can accept that you won't see me how I see you, but you choosing her over me every single time? That breaks my heart" she choked out, tears filling her eyes as she turned and walked away. Jughead watched her leave, his heart secretly broken inside too.
