A little bit of patience

"B you have to tell him, have you seen the way he looks at you?" Veronica encouraged as she painted her best friend's nails with her signature baby pink shade.

"You say that but we never even talk properly unless it is for the blue and gold or in English lessons" Betty sighed, blowing on her nails to help them dry.

"You're being oblivious, he will say yes. If he doesn't then it's his loss, any guy would be lucky to go out with you" she shrugged, screwing the lid back on the polish bottle. Betty groaned falling back onto the bed, staring up at the ceiling.

"Why are boys so difficult? Life would be much easier if they just walked up to you and said they liked you" she complained. Veronica laughed at her best friend's whining, laying down beside her.

"Agreed, it took forever for Archie to get the guts to tell me he liked me" she rolled her eyes with a fond smile.

"Alright, lucky you. You've got a boyfriend" Betty mumbled.

"And you'll find someone deserving of you eventually B, I know it"

Monday mornings were Betty's least favourite. She could barely drag herself out of her warm sheets to get ready for school, grumbling as she brushed her teeth in front of the bathroom mirror. Her phone buzzed next to her, Jughead's name popping up in her notifications bar.

Jughead: Hey Betty, I've got some ideas for the blue and gold. Do you wanna walk to school together and discuss? I can pick you up

Her eyes widened at the offer, a smile growing on her face as she quickly spat out the toothpaste and rinsed her mouth. She grabbed her phone and typed quicker than ever.

Betty: Sure! See you at my house in 20?

Jughead: See you there(:

She bit down on her lip, chucking her phone on the bed before looking through her wardrobe for something to wear. She picked out a denim pencil skirt and a pink jumper, getting changed before tying her unruly locks into a high ponytail. She lined her lips with strawberry lip gloss and slipped on her converse.

In just over 20 minutes, Betty left her house and locked the door behind her. She could see Jughead walking down the street, running down the steps to greet him.

"Hey Betty, ready to go?" he asked softly.

"Yep" she nodded, leaving her driveway towards the street side by side with him. They spent the whole time chatting about their newest article which had to include news about the football game (Weatherbee's orders) that neither of them cared about.

"Look I don't even know how to play it so I'm gonna be useless" Betty laughed.

"I don't know much, I'm sure if we just interview a couple of bulldogs we will have enough coverage" he suggested.

"Sure, I'll ask Archie to get some of his teammates together" she agreed. He nodded in agreement, shoving his hands in his pockets.

"Maybe we could interview them together at Pop's? That'll make the boredom more bearable. Then we could get some dinner after if you wanted to. We don't have to, it's just a suggestion-"

"Betty I'd love to" he interrupted with a soft chuckle at her habit to ramble. She blushed, looking down at her feet to avoid further embarrassment.

"Okay, it's a date!" she grinned before realising what she said "I mean- no not an actual- like a-"

"Betts it's a date" he smirked at her pink cheeks, finding it always drove him crazy.

"Saturday at 6?" she asked shyly.

"I'll be there"

Except he wasn't. Betty had done all the interviews by herself, seeing as he hadn't shown up on time. She had made an extra effort in her appearance, leaving her hair down in soft waves whilst wearing a pink halter neck dress with a denim jacket over the top. Once the last bulldog left, Betty closed her notebook and looked around once more. It was now 7 and there was no way he'd be arriving any time soon. She held back her tears, leaving a tip for Pop before grabbing her bag and walking out.

Quiet sniffles left her as she ran down the stairs, tears dripping down her cheeks. She shakily pulled out her phone and messaged Veronica, asking her if she could come over and talk.

"Betty!" a voice called out, causing her to turn around. She saw Jughead jumping off his bike, running up to her to stop her from leaving.

"I'm so sorry" he breathed out, pushing his curls out of his face.

"Is that all you've got? Jug I sat in there for an hour doing stupid football interviews, waiting for you to turn up so we could have dinner together. The least you could've done is messaged or called me, told me you weren't interested. This was more than just dinner to me and if I was foolish to think it was for you then just tell me" she argued, crossing her arms.

"You weren't being foolish" he shook his head, carefully uncrossing her arms to take her hands into his.

"Then where were you?" she mumbled, more tears falling as she blinked away the others.

"There was some trouble at the bar with some rival gang, my little sister was there so I had to get her somewhere safe. I had to help my dad sort them out and I promise you I got her as soon as I could. I would've called but service is down at the Southside as usual. I know I let you down but this meant more to me too" he pleaded, squeezing her hands.

"Is your sister okay?" she asked quietly, the anger in her slowly starting to fade.

"Yeah she's safe now with a family friend" he nodded "Can you forgive me?"

"Yeah, it's not your fault. I just thought maybe you weren't actually interested"

"Hey no, trust me I am. I'm just crap at saying how I feel" he chuckled, bringing her into his arms. She leaned up on her toes, head resting on his neck as he lifted her slightly. She pulled away a little, their noses brushing together as their eyes locked.

"Let me make it up to you" he whispered, one hand cupping her cheek as he connected their lips. She gasped into the kiss, soon melting into the gesture with her hands wrapping around his neck.

"Can we try again? Go back inside and have an actual date?" he asked as their foreheads joined in rest, breathing heavily.

"I'd love that" she whispered, giggling as he pecked her lips and took her back inside.

Jughead walked Betty to school that next Monday morning, only this time their fingers were intertwined and they stole kisses often.

"Hey I need to go speak to Sweets but I'll see you at first period" Jughead spoke as they walked through the metal gate entrance. She nodded, leaning up on her tiptoes to meet his lips in a soft kiss.

"One more" he mumbled when she went to pull away, wrapping his arms around her. Giggling against his lips, she accepted the final kiss before letting him go.

"Did I just spot my favourite blonde locking lips with a certain serpent?" Veronica asked as she strutted over to her best friend, trying to rush without tripping in her heels.

"Maybe" Betty grinned, biting down on her lip.

"Oh my god swoon! Tell me everything!" Veronica squealed, linking arms with her. The two girls walk through the halls together as Betty recalled the night she'd had that weekend.

"See I told you, a little bit of patience goes a long way"

"I'm not gonna get ahead of myself, it's all still new....but magical"
