Betty walked through the halls in her cheer uniform, completely in sync with her friends. Everyone cleared the way for the group as usual, the blonde staying quiet as Veronica and Cheryl gossiped about the latest love scandal of Riverdale. She pulled her sleeves down, covering her hands as they curled into fists. Alice Cooper hadn't been so kind this morning, commenting on anything she could. Whether it was her daughters grades or her weight, she'd find something to pick at until the girl crumbled.
She bit back tears, her eyes glossy as she lined her palms with red crescent shaped marks. She didn't know why but even listening to the girls talking and laughing made her want to walk away, everything was handed to them. Jughead had called her perfect, what was perfect about this? Nothing, nothing at all.
Her thoughts were interrupted when Veronica grabbed her arm, pointing over to Reggie who seemed to have a serpent in his grasp. The same serpent she'd found sleeping at school.
"Get off me" Jughead warned as Reggie yanked him back by his leather jacket. "What was that? I didn't catch it" Reggie smirked, only provoking the boy more. "Can your brain cells not comprehend those words? I said get off!" Jughead shouted, the jock jumping back in surprise. Jughead scowled and stormed off, bumping into Betty's shoulder making her stumble back.
"Woah, that guy has some serious issues" Cheryl scoffed, rolling her eyes. "Don't start Cher" Betty pleaded, turning around and running after the raven haired boy. Her friends called after her though she blocked them out, determined to unravel the mysterious serpent. She saw the door to the blue and gold close, making her way over and looking through the tinted glass where she saw him hunched over. "Juggie?" she spoke softly, walking in and sitting down next to him.
"Before you say anything I'm fine, he does that a lot" he chuckled, leaning back into the worn out leather. "That doesn't make it right" Betty shook her head but Jughead simply didn't want to listen "Give it a rest with the hero act" he rolled his eyes. Betty scoffed, standing up abruptly "Are you serious? You said I could talk to you anytime!" she argued.
"And I also said I'm not a project, so stick that in your head and then maybe we won't have an issue" he snapped but this time he wasn't the one to walk away, she was. She shook her head at him, her eyes glazing over with tears again as she turned around and walked away.
1 week later
"This is unacceptable Elizabeth! What if this affects your grade? I expect better!" Alice complained, looking through Betty's recent test results. "I'm really sorry mum, I was busy studying for the physics test so this one slipped my mind" she apologised, looking down at the floor in shame. Alice shook her head, walking out of the kitchen leaving her daughter crying at the table. She needed to get out of that house, away from her mother so she put her shoes on and walked out into the cold, dark night. There was no particular direction she was heading in, nowhere she really needed to go; she just walked aimlessly around the small town. Betty crossed a border without realising, a border that split the town into two. The 'good' and the 'bad', the 'perfect' and the 'imperfect'. Or as the residents called it the Northside and the Southside.
She stumbled upon a run down bar, the paint peeling at the windows and the sign that read 'Whyte Wyrm'. It was freezing cold to the point where goosebumps lined Betty's skin so she decided to enter the building through the creaking door and was immediately hit by the strong stench of alcohol like a smack in the face. That's when she noticed the collection of leather jackets with snake symbols imprinted on the back, her eyes widening in fear. That thought was soon interrupted when she noticed a familiar raven haired boy sat with a bottle in his hand, accompanied by three other serpents. She didn't want to talk to him after what he'd said but she was alone in a bar of serpents and by what she knew about them they weren't exactly friendly to northsiders. She weaved through the crowds, wracking with nerves as she approached Jughead and tapped him on the shoulder.
"Wha- Betty?" Jughead eyes widening, standing up. "Hi" she spoke quietly, looking up at him. He stood still for a minute before snapping back into reality, grabbing her hand and pulling her out of the bar quickly. They reached the pavement where she stood in front of him, her hands clasped together "Betty you can't be here, it's not safe" he urged.
"I didn't mean to, besides you don't care anyway" she mumbled. He sighed, shaking his head "Yes I do, and I'm sorry for what I said to you but that's not the point right now. It's really risky for you to be here"
"I just ended up walking around, I didn't realise I was on the Southside" she shrugged. He noticed her eyes red rimmed and glossy under the street lamp, his hand going to cup her cheek. "Have you been crying?" he asked, though he obviously knew the answer already. When she didn't respond he pulled her into his arms, hugging her tightly. She couldn't help but let tears fall, feeling like a failure to her own family. He felt something damp seep through his shirt, sighing and picking her up "Oh Betts..." he sighed, sitting down on the pavement with her in his lap. "Talk to me, what happened?" he asked softly, his arms tight around her. "My mum got angry at me again, I failed my maths test because I was busy studying for physics. I forgot we even had it" she sniffled. "Betts, that's okay. You don't have to get perfect scores every time" he assured, not understanding. "It's not when you have Alice as a mother, she screams at me if I don't do well. Any excuse to bring me down is good enough to her" she mumbled, playing with the material of his now damp t-shirt.
"I didn't know she was like that, I'm sorry but you shouldn't let her control your life" he sighed, rubbing her back. "I don't exactly have a choice, that's why I left. So I could get away for a while" she explained. He nodded, the conversation coming to a halt as they both went silent.
"Why did you say those things to me? Why do you think those things?" she spoke after a while, resting her head on his chest. "I don't know...I guess I just freaked out. You were doing something nice for me and I'm not use to that, so I went into some sort of overdrive" he shrugged. She nodded, cupping his cheek with one hand as she looked into his sky blue eyes "You're not a project Juggie, I would never treat you like that" she spoke in a stern tone with a hint of softness. "I know" he replied quietly, gazing into her emerald eyes that were practically pouring into his soul. They both leaned in slightly until her pink plump lips brushed over his, a small smile tugging at the corners as they met in a passionate kiss. The two opposites saying so much to each other without even talking, just with a sweet kiss.
