Chapter 13: Unmasked

~~Penthouse, One Central Place~~

The blinds were drawn apart to reveal the magnificent view of London's city lights against the backdrop of a full moon and midnight sky.

Too bad the beauty of the sight was wasted on the owner of the apartment. The man was seated on a leather winged-back chair directly in front of the wide expanse of the glass window, staring straight into the night sky yet seeing nothing but memories flashing before his eyes.

~*Flashback*~

"It doesn't have to be like this son. You don't have to leave. We can work this out. He will change. I believe he will."

"May be you can mother, but if I stay another minute in this house, living a facade of a happy family, I know that I'm going to lose my respect for everything that you stand for, mother. And I don't want that. I have come to respect you like my own. Let me have my happy memories of you."

The mother seeing that there is no chance of changing her beloved stepson's mind, bowed her head and accepted the truth in his arguments.
"Take this, this will tide you over." Handing the boy a thick wad of money in an envelope.

The boy pushed the envelope back to the woman. "No, mother. Have you forgotten that my own mother, bless her soul, has her own money too? She left it all to me. Don't worry mother, you too have raised me well, I can take care of myself."

"Please take it, it's not his. This is all mine. Please, it will ease my worries that you won't go hungry at least. You can keep it for a rainy day."

The older boy reluctantly took the thick envelope just to appease her, giving the woman a kiss on her cheek and embraced her tightly. Crouching down, he looked at his little brother.

"Little brother, take care of our mother for me. You must stand as the man of the house since our father isn't much of one."

The woman covered the seven year old boy's ears. "He's too young to hear that!"

The older boy stood up before turning away. "But he must know! Sooner or later he will know. The sooner that he learns about father, the better chance that he has to be not like him. Hurting the people who loves him the most."

The younger brother breaks from his mother's hold and runs after his older brother. "Kuya, don't leave me!

"Chubbs, I have to go.."

"When will you be back?"

"I don't know."

"Who's gonna teach me to play Mortal Kombat on the computer?"

"You'll learn together with your friends."

"Will I see you again?"

The older boy smiled ruefully. "If the fates allow it, little brother. If the fates allow it."

~*End of Flashback*~

"Has the fates truly allowed us to meet again little brother? Did you learn about father later rather than sooner that's why you hurt the person that loves you most?" Sighing deeply and pinching the bridge of his nose, feeling a headache coming on.

Taking the glass of scotch whiskey by the side table, the man stood up and walk towards his study area and went straight to his desk, flipping through his rolodex and after finally finding the right number, started dialing it on his phone.

"I have another job for you. I need all the information that you can get on a Richard James Rosales Fullerton as soon as possible. Payment terms are the same as before."
