Chapter 31: Oh, Baby!~~Still in RJ's Office, later that night~~
Sebby squeals in approval of the first person he saw. RJ was jerked back to reality and released his pent up breath. His brow was knotted in confusion as to whose child the baby was. His mind, not knowing any better, rationalized that the baby couldn't possibly be his for he had been celibate for more than a year. But on the other hand, he couldn't deny their resemblance. And his mind also chose to ignore the familiar eyes the baby has.
He leaned his head back into the sofa, deep in thought, trying to solve the mystery before him. He looked sideways at Sebby and reached out to hold the bracelet again. Sebby noticing for the first time that he had something new on, touched it along with RJ. RJ, smiled at the Sebby's natural curiosity.
He reached over with his other hand and ruffled Sebby's hair. Sebby raised his head and stared at him. RJ sighed, still wondering who Sebby's father is. RJ lookup up the ceiling. 'If Sebastian is not mine, nor could he possibly be my father's because my parents have been away on a cruise for the past year, then that leaves only one other person. My brother.'
While RJ was busy deducing who Sebby's father could be, Sebby was also busy struggling with the buckle of his baby seat. When he couldn't get it off, he started whimpering which caught his father's attention. Sebby looked at RJ with imploring eyes, which RJ, not used to babies, did not understand.
Sebby, as if realizing that his father didn't understand him, vigorously patted the buckle at his tummy. RJ, finally putting two and two together unbuckled Sebby from his baby seat. Thinking that he was already done, RJ made a move to stand up.
Sebby released a shrill cry to signify his disapproval of his father's action. RJ winced and looked back at the baby, wondering how such an adorable creature could cry out like that. Now that he was sure that he got his father's attention, Sebby waved his hands and kicked his feet in the air, conveying that he wanted to be picked up.
When his father didn't get what he wanted him to do, Sebby opened his mouth again, threatening to let out another ear-piercing cry. RJ not wanting to experience the shrill cry again, quickly bent down and cautiously picked the baby up, remembering that was what Alex and Mark would do to calm their children down.
Even though he has not held a 6-month-old child before, he felt at ease as he positioned Sebby's body on his chest with one hand at the back of the baby's head that was on his shoulder for support, while his arm went under Sebby's bum to carry his weight. Sebastian, finally being where he belongs, quiets down and snuggles closer to RJ. RJ saw them reflected on the glass window of his office. RJ couldn't help but smile at the rightness of the way they looked together.
~~Twyford, Berkshire; Maine's parents' house~~
Maine stretched on the bed, feeling refreshed because of her deep sleep. She stifles her yawns and wonders why the baby monitor was silent. She turns to her right and grabs the monitor from the nightstand. Maine checked it and found out that that the battery was dead. She pulls the cover from her and hurriedly slips out the bed, not noticing her mother who was curled up on the day bed near her room's bay window. Maine padded on silent feet towards the baby's crib across the room.
"How's Mommy's little prince today? Did you get a good night's sleep?"
Maine was surprise to find that the crib was empty. She then ran down to the kitchen, thinking that Sebby was with her mother having some snacks. As she stood at the threshold of the kitchen, memories of last night all came flooding back to her. The last word resonating in her mind was Philippines.
