Chapter 81: The Walk, The Shot and The Jam (part 2)
She removed her sandals and sat down on the pool edge, near the man-made fountain, her feet making water swirls. She took out her ticket and examined it. It did say in bold letters that the party would start at 7:30. It was already 7:45 and he still wasn't here. He was never late for anything. He was a stickler for punctuality. The ringing of her phone distracted her.
"Why the long face beautiful?" Ray asked.
She smiled into the receiver. "Well for one, my date isn't here yet. I'm beginning to think he's going to stand me up." She looked around the garden trying to find where he was but there were just too many people that she couldn't find him.
"It is his loss if doesn't come. If he is not coming, can I be your date instead?" Ray asked.
Alexa lifted her legs and tucked it to the side. "I don't know. I'm still hoping he will come soon. Besides, I'm a one-man-woman."
Ray stood up and walked over to the other side of the fountain. "I like the sound of that." He stood behind her. "Hey, I think we better end this, I see someone walking purposely towards you. It just might be your date. I don't think he will like it one bit to find you talking to another man."
Alexa pushed away a floating Japanese lantern. "Let him deal with it. Serves him right for making me wait."
Ray had to move back a little so that she wouldn't hear him laugh. "What can he do to make it up to you?"
Alexa drummed her nails against the tiles. She remembered that she would always hear him sing in the shower so why not in public? "A couple of songs with the band would do it for me."
Then the line went dead.
"Hello?" Alexa checked her phone.
He ended the call.
Then she heard his voice all over the place, singing the opening stanza of 'She.'

"Okay, there he goes!" Jacinta grabbed the remote and pushed the slow motion button. "Look Rob, our grandson is taking his first steps!"
Roberto made Sebastian stand on his legs. "Can you do that again for us? I want to see it for real this time."
RJ and Maine knew they should be more proud and excited than the grandparents, they were after all the parents but each turn of the video meant a turn closer to their doom. It was a wonder why his parents didn't notice their discomfort at watching their son take his first steps.
They thought too soon.
"Are you okay dear?" Jacinta asked as she saw Maine wipe her brow for the nth time.
"Uhm. The excitement is just getting to me." Maine said as she wiped her brow.
"Here, drink some." Roberto handed RJ his scotch. "You look like you're on death row instead of watching a milestone in your son's life."
'I might be if Mamá sees what's at the end of the recording.' RJ thought and laughed at himself dryly. "You're such a joker Papá. I'm just as excited as you guys are."
