Chapter 40: Thoughts Unbidden

"Oh God that was close," Maine breathed in a sigh of relief as she entered the bathroom yet again. She leaned against the door, hugging the clothes and the towel closer to her body. After a few seconds of inhales and exhales, she opened her eyes and walked towards the bathroom counter to inspect the clothes that RJ got her.

"With his experience with women, I thought he would have known how to dress one," she muttered under her breath in reproach as she lifted a thick sweatshirt from the pile.

But then again, this suits the purpose, she added as she remembered that she was bereft of underclothing, putting the sweatshirt on.

"I guess I have to do without undies for tonight," she sighed in resignation as she took the matching sweatpants to put them on. A package dropped to the floor as she shook the pants out.

"What do we have here?" Maine thought as she bent down to pick up the package. "Thank God for those girls," Maine chuckled at the absurdity of her thoughts as she tore open the package of disposable underwear. Who would have thought that she could find something to thank for about his playboy lifestyle?

Maine combed her fingers through her hair and took a last look at herself in the mirror, ensuring that her lack of one piece of underclothes wasn't showing. Instead of heading to the door that lead to the hallway, she went to the other door in her room that was connected to the nursery. When she entered, Nanny Virgie stood up and smiled in greeting.

"The little one is fast asleep, Ma'am. No need to worry. I will look after him while you are away," the nanny informed her.

"How long have you been looking after Sebastian?" she asked as she looked at her sleeping son.

"Since the night he came here," Nanny Virgie answered.

"Have you been staying in nursery with him?" Maine asked a question in reply.

"Oh no, RJ has been taking care of Sebastian ever since he arrived here. He even took a leave of absence from his office to spend time with him," nanny Virgie replied. "That surprised us all since he rarely takes time off from work. Even when he got hospitalized . . .," the old nanny quipped.

"Hospitalized? When? Why?" Maine asked in rapid succession, interrupting Nanny Virgie's story.

"He was hospitalized because . . .," nanny Virgie's voice trailed off as she noticed butler Walter at the door looking at her.

"Because? Please do continue," Maine prodded.

"Madam, the soup is getting cold and Sir Richard is waiting for you to dine," butler Walter said, politely interrupting their conversation.

"Thank you," she said to the butler, "and I'll be right back after dinner," she finished, looking purposely at the nanny.

"This way Madam," the butler said as he held the door for her.

Maine started walking ahead of the butler, making her miss the look that butler Walter shot nanny Virgie inside the nursery.

RJ didn't know how he felt it but he knew the instant she was in the room with him. It started with the prickling of the hairs on the back of his neck. Then it continued with the acceleration of the beating of his heart. He stood up and turned towards the door at the same moment she crossed the threshold of the dining room.
