Chapter 85: Last Man Standing

He was out of the cab even before it made full stop in front of their house. RJ just grabbed a wad bills from his pocket and threw it at the drive. Dread ran through as he saw his father supported by Maine, facing her obviously angry father and distraught mother. "PAPÁ! MAINE!"

Her heart surged with relief when he heard her voice. "RJ!" She called out, her hand reaching out to him, finding her strength in his presence.

He took over supporting his father, gathering her in arm. "What is happening?" he asked, addressing his question to both of them.

Roberto still has to pay. Let the sins of the father pass onto the son. "There will be no wedding. That's what's going to happen."

RJ held her tighter as her knees gave in beneath her. "NO!"

"Teddy, leave our daughter out of this!" Marissa pleaded.

Teddy wrestled her from RJ. "She is MY daughter and she will abide by my wishes!" dragging Maine back to the house.

Roberto disentangled himself from his son. "Go."

"Mr. Mendoza!" RJ banged on the door. "Please! We've got nothing to do with this. We weren't even born yet!" He saw Maine free herself from her father's grasp, moving towards the sliding doors on the side of the house.

They held hands despite the glass that separated them. "I love you Maine!"

Her father caught up with her and yanked her away from the glass doors.

Sirens wailed. And RJ soon found that he was being cuffed.

Maine struggled and ran back to him. "RJ!"

"Maine!" The policeman on both his sides started to take him away. "I love you! I'll get you back! You and our son!"

Maine crumpled to the floor, her tear-stained cheek imprinting itself against the glass as she helplessly watched them take him away. "RJ!"

He looked at the date displayed on his phone. His eyes went about the room, finally settling on her face. A week had gone by and nothing changed. She still refused to wake up. Outside, chaos reigned. His son's life was in shambles. It was his entire fault, all because he love her. The night that they spent in the slammer, he finally found the courage to bare their story.

RJ's reaction after the tale made him both proud and humbled. Instead of despising his father for wrecking his chance at happiness, RJ offered understanding and forgiveness. 'Thank you for raising him well.' Roberto whispered against Jacinta's hands.

The house remained silent despite the constant movement inside. Teddy looked at his wife who moved quietly around the kitchen, just acknowledging his presence by serving his breakfast. Even his grandson, who was usually cheerful and energetic during breakfast, seemed almost catatonic. His daughter was worst. Maine went through the routine of the past week only for her son, barely eating and always staring off into space. "You can go ahead at dinner tonight. I have to oversee something at work." Teddy said as he went out of the back door to start a new day, for him and for them.
