Chapter 1: Substitute and Apple Blossoms~*~*~*~*~*~*~
The day was a picture perfect example of London's fall season. Apple blossoms were scattered all over the grounds of London Business School. The sun gave off a yellow- orange hue, tainting the sky gold. Birds could be seen beginning their migration pattern in preparation for winter while the wind would blow breezes that would twirl the fallen leaves.
A bell rang, piercing the morning air, signaling the last five minutes before the start of the first class of the day. Students, who were still outside hustled to get to class on time to avoid being marked absent.
Maine banged her hand on the steering wheel. "Shit! Why can't you find a parking space when you need one! Great! Just great. I'll be late again for my Financial Banking class. I hope that Prof. Tindley arrives later then I do."
Seeing an open parking space, Maine stepped on the accelerator. In her haste, she almost bumped a Mercedes SLK that was also eyeing the same spot. The other driver pressed his horn hard catching Maine's attention. She just glared at the driver and proceeded to park her tiny old second-hand Nissan Micra into the parking space. She cut the engine, got out of the car, locked it and sped off without giving the other driver a second glance.
Student's voices could be heard from the stairwell that Maine was climbing to get to her class. She thought that it was a good sign for surely; her classmates would not be noisy if their professor was already there. She hastened her walk, eager to get to class just in case Prof. Tindley was not far behind.
Maine was panting and wiping her brow when she settled into her seat. Thank god ol' Tindley is not yet here, she thought.
She brought out her notebook and calculator to review last week's notes on the money market strategy. Maine was wrapped in punching numbers on her calculator that she didn't see the new arrival in the lecture hall.
The noise suddenly died and shuffling of feet could be heard as her classmates went back to their respective seats. Despite this Maine still didn't look up to see who caused the silence. It was when the new arrival spoke that her head snapped up.
What she saw made her breath hitch in her throat.
The new arrival spoke. "Good Morning! I believe this is Professor Tindley's Financial-Banking class?"
The class stared back at him, some of the students nodding their answer to his question. "I'm sorry to say that Prof. Tindley wouldn't be able to make it today so I'm here as his substitute. I would have been here earlier but I got tied up in the parking lot looking for a parking space. By the way, I'm Mr. Ray Tesoro." He gave the girls in the front row a wink and a gorgeous smile. "Call me Ray, I'm sure we've got only a few years between us."
While the all the girls in the class were murmuring how good looking the new substitute professor is, others were saying that they hope Prof. Tindley would not come back while some were wondering whether Ray was attached or available, Maine was just recovering from her shock.
When it rains, it pours. Maine told herself. 'Why couldn't my car have been tinted? Because you can't afford it!' Replied an inner voice in a mocking tone. I just hope he didn't get a good look at me at the parking lot.
Financial Banking was Maine's favorite subject, in fact she was the top student in this class, always getting the highest mark in every test or assignment that was given. Yet for the life of her, she just couldn't concentrate on the lecture that Mr. Ray was giving. All she could think about was when can she get out of the lecture hall and escape from him.
Every time Mr. Ray would scan the crowd of students seated before him, Maine got nervous thinking that he, would at any moment, recognize that she was the one who cut him in the parking lot early in this morning.
Five minutes before the bell, Mr. Ray ended his lecture and distributed some financial case studies to be analyzed. He then required the class to submit their written analysis by next class. The whole class groaned their disapproval.
Ray cajoled the class. "Come on guys I know that Prof. Tindley gives more assignments then what I have given."
He was about to say something more when the bell rang signaling the formal end of the two-hour class. Students quickly placed their stuff in their bags and were getting ready to walk towards the doors when he added, "Oh and please bring an index card next week along with a passport size picture. I need it to know your names and faces. Thanks and have a good day!"
