Chapter 50: Fairy Tales and A Teddy Bear

Maine discovered a lot of new things about RJ after their poignant declarations at Victoria's. What she didn't know that he too was discovering new things about himself.

The first thing that she noticed was that he was such a fan of public display of affection. As soon as she stepped out of the inner chamber, he immediately got hold of her hand and never let it go. Even when he was signing the credit card receipts, he held on to her hand. If he wasn't holding her hand, his arm would be around her shoulders or her waist, and thereafter alternating between those three places. Maine had the feeling that given the chance, he would have gone with her when she went to ladies room.

RJ was still reeling from the effects of their declarations. He felt as if his whole personality has turned 180 and he wasn't the least bit worried. He was never a fan of public display of affection. He always thought that affections are best displayed in private. But looking at him now, one would think he was one of the originators of the concept. Ever since they left the boutique, he has not let go of her. His hands were always on her. Her hand, her shoulders, her waist, anywhere that wasn't considered indecent to hold in public, his hand was there. He would have gladly gone to the ladies room with her if not for the scandal it would have created.

"Isn't it the number one rule in driving is that you have to have both hands on the steering wheel?" Maine teased him as they drove to an upscale restaurant after a tiring day at the mall. Had she not begged off and said she was hungry, they would still be at the mall shopping. And that's another thing she discovered about him, RJ knows his shops. He knew all the right places to shop and held the purse strings loose. No wonder the women loved him.

Maine gagged the nagging little voice in her head the whole day when it kept on insisting that she delve on his playboy lifestyle as they made the rounds of the boutiques in the malls, the managers of which knew him by name. The past shouldn't matter right? What's important is the present. And she really plans to enjoy her present.

He looked at her quizzically. "Huh?" and just settled their joined hands on his thigh.

Maine looked at their joined hands, and then the steering wheel. "The wheel? Your hand?" she said, giving him a hint.

He finally got what she meant. "Oh, but I don't want to. . ." squeezing her hand, choosing to let her feel rather than hear what he wanted to say.

The light had turned red, giving her an opportunity to reassure him. She turned in her seat and touched his face for him to look at her. "I'm not going anywhere RJ." Giving a voice to his fear.

He was surprised that she knew.

"Not without you and our son," she added quietly.

He didn't know how to answer her so he just did the next best thing. He showed her. RJ leaned forward and gave Maine a lingering kiss on the lips. When he was done, he placed their joined hands on his chest, near his heart. Letting her feel that his heart now only beats for her and their son.

She smiled at him brightly. "It's a good thing that this car is an automatic."

His peal of laughter rang throughout the car.

~~Sebastian's Nursery~~

Maine grinned as she spied RJ sitting comfortably at the corner of the nursery with their son sitting on his lap, holding what looked to her as a storybook. 'So that is what he is for,' referring to the life-size teddy bear that RJ insisted on buying on top of the numerous other baby toys they bought when they went into Hamley's.
