Chapter 27: Rainy Days and Mondays

~~Ray's Office, a little after 8 p.m.~~

Ray pushed the elevator button impatiently. He tapped his foot as he looked at the elevator's monitor.

When he stepped into the elevator, he started humming to entertain himself because he was the elevator's only occupant. It was not the first time that he had the elevator to himself.

In fact it was more like a routine for him now. Ever since Maine had Sebastian, they never had to chance to go home together like they used to. Nowadays, as soon as the clock strikes 5, Maine would be out the door and collecting Sebastian at the Crèche, a few floors below.

Today, she left earlier because her parents were in town, to celebrate their daughter's birthday.

~~Early that day~~

Maine entered her office carrying the flowers that her secretary gave her. "Thanks Zelle. Don't forget to bring your family to my little celebration later okay?"

Maine's swivel chair spun around to reveal Ray setting on it, holding onto a small package. He stood up as soon as Maine saw him and he started singing 'Happy Birthday to You', a little bit off-key on the high notes.

Maine gave him a hug in return when he finished the song. Ray presented his gift and she hugged him again to show her appreciation. When she opened it, her lips formed an O.

Inside the small package was a necklace with an exquisite rose pendant with a diamond in the center.

"Oh my! This must have cost a fortune. Ray, you shouldn't have!"

Ray smiled. "Well, the gift is a bribe because I'll be late for tonight's celebration. I'm swamped with paperwork that needs to be sent via courier first thing in the morning."

"But this is still too much!" she protested.

Giving her a pinch in the nose, "Nothing is too much for my favorite girl in the world," leaving her in her office. "I'll see you later. Save some of Auntie's fruit salad for me."

The doors of the elevator opened to admit another passenger. Ray was surprised to see that it was Alexa. She had changed to casual clothes, jeans and t-shirt that revealed more of the figure that he thought she had.

Alexa saw Ray in the center of the elevator and gave a small nod of recognition and made a move to press the ground floor button but saw that it was already lighted. Ray moved to the side to make space for her although there was enough space for them to run circles around each other.

The silence in the elevator started to get deafening. When Ray couldn't stand it anymore, he decided to start a small talk but he couldn't seem to find any topic. He then noticed that she was massaging her neck. He spoke the first thought that came into his mind and then wished he just held his tongue.

"I give good back rubs!"

Alexa stopped massaging her neck and turned to look at him. "What?"

Ray felt the heat creeping up his cheeks. "I meant tough day at your job? I didn't know the crèche did overtime work."

"Oh no. I just stayed behind to finish the inventory and update some files in the office."
