Chapter 22: PushThe speedometer kept on rising as the car sped its way along the intercity highway. The man behind the wheel was desperate to get to his destination on time. He made a sharp turn at the exit he almost missed, earning him a loud horn from the car behind him. He glanced at the dashboard clock; he made the 45-minute trip in less than 15 minutes. As the hospital came into view, he felt a surge of hope. He can still make it on time.
~~The Birth Centre, Royal London Hospital~~
The nurse raced to her room. "Her water bag broke! Page Dr. Weismann." she said to the other nurse that came with her when the alarm went off.
Dr. Weismann arrived a few minutes later. "Contractions? Dilatation?"
"They are very close, 2 every 6 minutes. Dilatation is at 8." the nurse replied.
Dr. Weismann opened Maine's eyes and pointed her pen light. "She's still under the effects of the sedatives, how many minutes more till they wear off?"
The nurse looked at her lapel watch. "Just ten more minutes."
Dr. Weismann checked the reading on the fetal monitor. "Let's just hope the baby cooperates until then."
She turned to Maine's parents and Ray and asked them to step outside first so they can do their job. She then asked the nurse to bring in the ultra sound machine so that she could see if the baby had changed its position since the last time she checked.
"Oh good he's turned. He is in position."Just then, another alarm went off. This time it was the fetal monitor. Dr. Weismann looked at the reading and shook her head wearily.
"It's getting worse." Dr. Weismann checked the clock. Seven minutes more. She went to head of the bed and took Maine's face into both hands and shouted her name.
"Maine! Do you hear me? You need to wake up! Your baby is in danger!" Still there was no response. She tried again, this time shaking her while she shouted her command.
Maine's drugged mind could not recognize the rest of what Dr. Weismann said. It only took notice of the fact that her baby was in danger. Their baby was in danger. Like a swimmer frantic for breath, Maine's consciousness struggled to find release from her drugged induced sleep. As she was about to surface, another contraction hit her, making her cry out in pain.
The breath of the three people outside her room hitched when they heard her scream. Dr. Weismann held her face. "Maine! Focus. You need to wake up. We need to deliver
your baby. He is getting too distressed inside."Maine, still blinking away her heavy sleep. "My baby... RJ's son?" was all she could babble.
Dr. Weismann, though not knowing what she was talking about, decided to play along realizing that it was the only thing Maine's mind could concentrate upon. "Yes, RJ's son. He needs to get out."
Maine slurred. "Out?"
Dr. Weismann, getting frantic as she sees the fetal heart rate dip another notch. "Yes. Out! Maine, you need to push RJ's baby out."
Seeing that Maine has finally understood what she needed to do, Dr. Weismann signaled the nurse to raise the bed into a sitting position to help Maine with the pushing. She then positioned herself at her feet to facilitate the birth.
The nurse stood as her birthing coach. "You can do this Maine, just breathe... and push!"
"Maternity ward?"
"It's on the 5th floor Mr. Fullerton. But visiting hours for the morning are already over, Sir. You have to come back in the afternoon."
RJ gave the nurse an excited smile. "Oh I'm not visiting. I'm the father!" he said as he ran towards the elevator banks.
RJ decided to take the stairs when he saw the number of people waiting for the elevators. By the time he reached the 5th floor, he was panting but he didn't stop for a breather. He knew that he had little precious time. He checked with the nurse's station and went to find her room.
"ARGGGGGHHHHHH!"
"You're doing great Maine. I can see the head. Another big push Maine."
Maine shook her head. "I can't" she said in a very weak whisper.
"You can't give up now. Do it for your baby. One more push Maine, use your contractions as your springboard. Come on, another one is coming, push Maine. Push!"
Maine bit her lower lip in determination. "Ahhhhhhhhhhh!" her lips letting out a scream as another contraction hit her hard.
A piercing cry reverberated through the air.
"It's a boy!" Dr. Weismann held her baby and raising him for her to see. "He's beautiful Maine!"
"My son! I'm a father! I have a son!" were his joyous thoughts when he heard the squalling of the infant.
Dr. Weismann handed Maine her son after she had completed the birthing procedure. "Congratulations! You were amazing back there."
Maine was so absorbed in her son that she didn't hear the doctor.
"Huh?"
Dr. Weismann chuckled. "Never mind. I'll let them in."
The door to Maine's room opened cautiously. RJ stepped inside and hurriedly went to her side. Maine gave him a weak but contented smile. She extended her hand to him, offering his son for him to hold. RJ reached out and was about to hold his son in his arms when he felt somebody touching his shoulders, shaking him.
Nanny Virgie was holding the cordless phone while shaking RJ's shoulder with the other. "RJ, wake up. It's a hospital trying to call you."
RJ replied still half asleep. "Why would they be calling, I was just there."
"What? You never left the house again after you came in early this evening. How can you say you're just there?
"Nanny, what are you saying?"
"The hospital is waiting, are you going to take the call or not?"
"Fine, give me that damn phone."
The hospital only called to inform him that the woman he almost hit had delivered a healthy baby boy and that there was no complications what so ever. After hanging up, he went directly to his bathroom to wash away the sleep from his mind, to enable him to sort out what just happened to him.
RJ looked at his drenched face in the mirror. 'Was it really all a dream? How come it felt so real? I even still feel out of breath! Could my dream be true? Is her son mine?'
