Chapter 25: Outside Looking In

~~Ninoy Aquino International Airport, Midnight~~

The chauffeur opened the door of the Land Rover Range. A pair of blue LV loafers stepped out onto the platform. He ran his hand through his hair. While the chauffeur got his bag from the trunk, he slung his carry-on on his shoulder. The chauffeur offered to carry his luggage for him but he waived him off and just told the chauffeur to get on home. As he watched the taillights of his SUV disappear beyond the curve, he happened to catch a glimpse of the sky from the corner of his eye. There it was again, his star, twinkling brightly for him.

A voice emerged from the PA system.
"Passengers bound for London, England, Philippine Airlines flight PR 720 is boarding at gate 55."

"Here I go again. Wish me luck. I need it."

~~Fullerton Mansion, RJ's bedroom~~

RJ took a long sip of his black coffee. It has become his ritual to drink black coffee after waking up from his recurring dreams. Each one was becoming more intense than the last one. Tonight, the baby in his dream has grown up. He was now calling out to him. Up to now, his voice was still ringing in his ears. 'Daddy, where are you?' He walked to his bay windows and looked out. His star winked at him.

The twinkling star seemed to be mocking him. 'You wanted a sign. I've already given you two. Now what do you plan to do?'

RJ moved away from the windows and moved back to his night table. He switched his phone on and dialed for his travel agent.

~~The Docklands, Early Evening~~

"Are you sure this is the right address?"

"Yes Sir. Shall I wait for you here?"

RJ stepped out onto the curb. "No. I'll just call you where to meet me," closing the chaffeured rented Bentley's door.

RJ jogged up the steps and swiped the security card that the building management secretly gave him when he last went here to enter Maine's building.

When he was standing in front of Maine's door, he kept on marching back and forth, still in indecision on whether or not to push the doorbell.

'What will I say? Hi! I happened to be in the neighborhood so I thought I'd dropped by? Too fake! How about, Hi! Long time no see, do you mind if I come in and let's have a chat to catch up on lost time? Too lame! Argh!' Running his hands through his hair.

He steadied himself and poised his hands to press the doorbell. 'It's now or never RJ.' he said to himself.

Maine's doorbell chimed. RJ took a deep breath in anticipation of seeing her again. The door still remained closed. He pressed the doorbell again. Still the door remained shut. He pressed his ear to the door, trying to hear if there were any movements coming from the other side; there were none.

"Great! This is just great! All this for nothing!"

He stomped away from Maine's apartment, hands in his pocket, head bent in dejection and frustration. Then something he felt in his pocket made him turn back.

"Why not? I'm here anyway."

He went back to Maine's door and attached a small device just above the lock. He turned it on and waited a few minutes for it to work its magic. Its a prototype device developed for the military by Gio's company. The he heard the door unlock.
