* Originally, the Water Elemental was supposed to be a siren; however, since I already did that one for Kazuki, this is a replacement one shot so as to provide more variety. Also, I'd like to apologize for not including a picture, but honestly, octopi are my worst fear so I'd like to not risk seeing a real one instead of a humanoid thing. *
When she was younger, there was a young girl that, more than anything, loved swimming. He remembered the first time he watched her little legs paddle her just barely out of the sand. Perhaps she was three years old at that point, small enough to avoid being detected by the other people of the island, but not quite big enough to support herself in the water for very long. On the contrary, though she was exhausted, she attempted to swim as far and much as she could before having to retreat back to solid ground.
Looking up at her from the bottom of the ocean, he saw her small silhouette, the amount of effort she put in almost pitiful. He had half the mind to eat her, his stomach growling at him for an unsalted meal. It wasn't as if he minded eating the creatures of the ocean, their forms sustaining him more than that of human flesh. Such beings were his favorite meal however, their bodies plump and tender, savory but not salty, and most of all, not slimy.
He reached up a tentacle-like limb to the surface in order to drown her, but he soon stopped as she began to giggle. Holding it in place from where he had stopped it, his eyes continued to survey her form with a great curiosity. Never had another human tried to swim in the ocean when he lurked there. They feared him, only ever sailing across to other islands the day after they had fed him. That was the only thing he would allow. Any other day was a death sentence, yet that little thing simply enjoyed splashing around in the water. She was either oblivious to or uncaring of his presence.
Letting the limb fall back to his side on the ocean's sanded floor, he continued to watch her with great interest. Every day she would return to the ocean, playing with any creatures she could find. Every day he would watch her, wondering when she would finally gain consciousness of his presence. And every day, she would be yelled at - with great panic - to go back to shore.
It saddened him to see her go, his lonely existence becoming filled with the silhouette of her small form swimming filling it if only temporarily. He wondered what would happen if he touched her, and one day, he decided to test the question that danced around his mind. As she was swimming, he reached up to her foot and lightly wrapped it around her, gaging her reaction. Much in the way he expected, the small thing panicked and even dunked her head under the water to see what had touched her.
At the sight of his feeler, she shrieked and splashed around for a bit. It was perhaps in anger of her fear of him that he gripped tighter onto her ankle, debating whether or not he should drown her. However, she then gave a curious and somewhat delighted expression, beginning to pet him despite the overwhelming size of his arm. He felt his face become hot, confused at the nature of her kindness. His racing heart was only stopped as she was once more called back to the surface and once more, the sea became dark. Days passed by, weeks passed by, months passed by, and then years.
. . .
(Y/n) felt the cool water on her ankles, her face glowed with a faint pink. The feel of it always rejuvenated her despite the fact she was scolded for going close. When she was younger, perhaps a toddler or so, she went out into the ocean every day. It was the highlight of her day. However, the moment she was told the truth about the island, she became reluctant to go too far into the water.
The island was not small, but it was not large either. There was an expansive forest, but besides the small farm, that was the only natural resource they had. When they could, they tried to rely on things on the smallish island, never turning to the ocean's perilous depths for food. A monster lurked there, and as such, the islanders could never rely on the waters surrounding them. The only time they were able to gain resources was the day after the creature devoured his meal. Then they could travel to other islands and trade. However, it was only once a month, and they couldn't rely upon it either.
