A tapping sound echoed through the room, the male across from the sound quivering in uncertainty. His eyes darted from side to side as he waited for something to be said. However, he had already been waiting for well past half an hour in silence. As such, he tried to find something else to occupy his fearful mind. His servants could do nothing for him, considering their standing in the presence of their surprise guest.
The other boy sat, legs crossed, lifting the teacup to his lips as elegantly as possible while occasionally brushing his medium-cut chocolate hair to the side. From time to time, he would also dart his dark eyes up at his nervous host before unamusedly looking back down. More so focused on the taste of the tea, he suddenly scrunched his nose before placing it down. Glaring at the male across from him, he huffed, resting his elbow on the arm of the table.
"Does the tea displease you, your highness? I can have the servants - "
"No."
The male stood up quickly. His own attendants quickly adjusted his outfit to ensure his perfect image was maintained. The boy then looked down at his peer before leaving the dorm, soundlessly. The viscount's son let out a fearful exhale at the prince's leaving, all but collapsing on the sofa. He hadn't ever spoken to the prince, hadn't even seen him personally outside of classes. Perhaps he had occasionally partnered with him during certain class projects, but even then, he was incredibly distant.
The son of an archduchess and the emperor, he was an unstoppable force of perfectionism and of power. He held himself to an incredible standard, one that no doubt was given to him by his mother's side. Regardless, in whatever he did, it was perfect. He made sure of that. His clothes were always cleaned without a spot left on them and his grades in the noble academy were nothing short of excellent.
The male always ranked the highest, achieved the most, and got the most recognition for all that he did. It may have been perhaps he held others to similar standards that he was so cold to most everyone else. So coming to see one of his peers for no reason at all was quite the sight. Obviously, the viscount's son saw to it that he alerted his father of the changes of the prince's interest. Even if it only happened once, it was an opportunity to progress their family by currying favor with the prince.
The letter was short, brief, and to the point. His father replied abruptly as well, but nonetheless took an interest in it. The viscount's son, Dante, was relieved when it was all over, but then the prince came again. He did the same thing as he did last time, appearing at the door with a curt expression before sitting down. Again, he drank the tea, but again, he made a face at its taste, refusing it. He then left again after half an hour before leaving, only to come back the next day to repeat the process.
Dante continued to send his father letters of the progression of the prince's meetings with him, but the issue was that neither knew what exactly he wanted. On the contrary, they knew nothing at all. So they waited patiently for the prince to make a decision. Of course, the boy's father encouraged him to please the royal in any way he could, even sending extra funds and luxuries to be gifted to him. Still, the prince was unmoved, refusing any and all gifts he was given with a sneer. To him, they were worthless.
One day, the little prince arrived at the same time he normally did, sat down at the table he normally did, and refused the tea as he normally did. He then looked up with a strangely interested gaze before darting his eyes to a family picture. Dante followed his stare, jumping in surprise. Really, it was his own imagination that led him to make the conclusion that the prince was interested in his sister. His father would have obviously adored it if they became in-laws with the imperial family, so with that thought, he sought to inquire about it. However, he wasn't able to.
"I hear...," the prince paused with a smirk, "you have a younger sister."
Dante paused before lighting up in exultation. He then summoned one of his servants before whispering something to him quickly. The attendant rushed off in a hurry before coming back with a box. The others helped to place more suitable snacks on the table as well as switching out the prince's tea. Granted, he wouldn't have enjoyed anything they served to him. He simply scoffed under his breath.
