She stared at herself in the mirror, not believing the reflection she was looking back at now was hers.
It was strange.
Just last year she had the dreams of becoming the number one hero, a powerful hero capable enough to surpass her own mother, Violet. Heck, she even had the dream to become a better hero than All Might; a trait she had unconsciously got from her childhood friend, Bakugou. Airi was so excited when she managed to enter UA Academy, the most prestigious hero academy in Japan. She was thrilled at the thought of having friends to train with after so many years training alone.
Just last year, it was the first time Airi had fallen in love with someone.
At the thought of love, she almost laughed to herself. How pathetic, how naive, how innocent. She was so blinded by love, she forgot about the fear she had locked in the deepest depths of her heart. She forgot her place.
Airi forgot who she was.
Even after her encounter with Kurogiri, who was the first ever villain who desperately asked her to realise who she was all this time, Airi was still convinced she was the hero of her own story. All thanks to the boy she had helplessly fallen in love with. Airi closed her eyes, and she could almost imagine the boy standing in front of her. Those turquoise and grey orbs, which reflected reassurance whenever she told about her worries, those red and white locks of hair which were so soft to thread her fingers through, those warm hands clasping around hers. Even though Airi despised herself for saying this, she had to admit how every part of her soul missed him so badly.
Airi missed Shoto.
She could feel her heart clench at the thought of her leaving the boy just like that. She recalled how painful he looked when she lets go of their intertwined hands for the last time. A lonely tear escaped her eyelids when she once again remembered how persistent he was in letting her go. Shoto deserved so much better, and Airi knew that from the start.
So, why did she fall in love with him in the first place?
"Don't you think you're crying too much?"
A deep, venomous voice cuts through the silence. She snapped her eyes open, turning to look back only to notice his emotionless turquoise orbs gazing back at her. Panicked, she wiped the tear from running down her cheek with the back of her palm.
