Airi dialled her mother's phone number again.
She knew it was worthless to even try at this point since she tried calling her for 10 times in a row already, but she still kept her hopes up. She waited, each buzz of the connection line turning deafening in every second. She prayed her mother would eventually pick up, and she hoped this time God would listen.
What felt like years turned into seconds the moment the buzzing of the other end of the line stopped abruptly. Airi's eyes widened in shock. Perhaps, her mother actually cared for her.
"Hello?"
"Mom! It's me, Mari.", Airi couldn't hide the excitement in her voice anymore.
"Honey! My goodness, it's been so long since I've talked to you. I'm so sorry, I've been really busy these days."
"It's fine. I just wanna ask if you could make it today...?"
Airi pursed her lips, she closed her eyes tightly with hopes her mother actually remembered what day it was.
"Today? What's with today?"
She could literally hear her heart shatter into pieces. She releases a shaky breath, her fingers trembling again. Reo and Hina looked at their sister in sympathy, and since Hina could read her mind, she could immediately guess what her mother had said. The little girl then looked at her brother, shaking her head sadly.
Nevertheless, she clears her throat and tries to keep her voice stable.
"I'm having my Sports Festival today."
A few pauses, she could hear heavy shuffling behind the line.
"Oh my god! Good heavens, I completely forgot! Uncle Nezu had told me about this.... Ah- dammit, honey I'm really sorry-"
"No, it's fine if you can't make it.", Airi gulped the lump in her throat. "Really, if you're busy then I don't mind."
