She stared at the calendar in her journal, her eyes being the only hint of her hidden emotions.
Airi could only sigh in defeat when she realised it had been two whole months since she had seen her mother. She didn't receive a phone call or even a text message from her mother after the Sports Festival, not that any of it mattered anymore since she didn't even win the competition. Her mother would only ask her questions to why she had lost, adding up to more reasons why she shouldn't even contact her mother in the first place. It was useless.
"Good morning, Mari-san!"
The familiar tone of cheery voice snapped her back to her senses, as she lifted her head away from staring at her journal and smiled when she saw her black haired friend walking in the class.
"Morning, Momo."
She walked to her desk and placed her books, eyeing the girl in curiosity.
"You're here early."
"What are you talking about? I'm always early.", Airi stated matter-of-factly.
Momo chuckled slightly. "I know, but earlier than usual. Plus, its the weekends after the Sports Festival. I thought you would be later than usual."
The girl took out her pencil, starting to sketch mindlessly on the empty pages of her journal. "I don't know. I feel exactly the same every morning."
Momo sighed lightly at her empty responses. She couldn't quite understand the girl's mood this morning. Usually Airi would be bright, cheery and very active especially early in the mornings, which was quite the opposite of everyone in the class. But she seemed a little bit off today.
"Oh, right!", Momo walked to her desk, "Congratulations on getting 3rd for the Sports Festival!"
And just like she had guessed, Airi's face brightened slightly, her lips in a small smile as she responded with a,
"Thanks, Momo. You weren't so bad yourself. Tokoyami can be quite merciless sometimes, so your defeat was very understandable.", Airi reassured, knowing she had been considering the bird boy as a tough opponent for her.
