"Bondita!" Anirudh yelled, "What is this?"
Bondita looked from her Pati Babu to the mattress shop owner, wondering how she would get out of this one. She hadn't thought of the explanation she would give her Pati Babu when she proactively went and bought the bed.
She was quiet as she tried to think of a strategy in her head.
"Bondita, say something!" Anirudh yelled. "What is all this?"
All the villagers who were gathered there were quietly watching the scene. The three people from the mattress shop were also quietly standing there -- the owner had his arms folded, looking very upset.
Bondita looked up at her Pati Babu with her wide eyes, but Anirudh wasn't falling for her cuteness this time.
"Did you go and buy this mattress Bondita?" he screamed, making her jump.
"Y - Yes Pati Babu," she squeaked.
"Why would you do that?" he yelled. "Do I send you to school to study or to do all these things?"
Bondita tensed up.
He turned to look at the people from the mattress store.
"Sorry for wasting your time, but we don't need any mattresses," Anirudh said. "We have no money to pay you for it, so please, just take it and leave."
The mattress store owner sighed heavily.
"Look Barrister Babu, we respect you very much, but we are only doing our business. And your wife has paid us already," he explained.
"She paid you?" Anirudh bellowed, and glared at Bondita again. "How did you do that Bondita?"
Her lips quivered.
"Bondita, did I ask the wall, or am I asking you?" he yelled.
"Kakasasurji..." she began.
"Great!" Anirudh screamed, throwing his hand up in the air, not even letting her complete. "So Kaka gave you money and you just took it? Do you not understand my values Bondita?"
He didn't know whether he was more upset that Kaka gave Bondita money, or if Bondita didn't understand him. Why did Bondita not understanding him bother him so much?
"P - Pati Babu..." she stammered nervously, playing with her fingers. "I..."
"Can we go now?" the mattress shop owner asked, clearly more interested in leaving from this scene than collecting more money.
"We don't want the mattress!" Anirudh bellowed. "Take the money and the mattress with you."
"Barrister Babu, carrying this mattress back will cost you more, so it's better you just keep it," the mattress shop owner said.
Anirudh was done with all of this. He just angrily opened the lock to the home and allowed the mattress shop owner and his two men to carry in the mattress. It was a double size mattress -- slightly bigger than a single person one, but not so big like a queen or king size.
"Your wife wanted the best mattress, but the bigger ones wouldn't fit through the door. This is the only size we can get in," the mattress store owner said as Bondita looked at the floor nervously. "It's comfortable."
After he placed the mattress against the wall, the men left. Anirudh then glared at the villagers, who were still huddled around.
"Is there more to see?" Anirudh screamed. The villagers started to back away, all of them gossiping with each other. Then Anirudh turned to look at Bondita. "Once I have a little more money Bondita, I'm going to donate this mattress somewhere. None of us are using it!"
He stormed inside the hut. Bondita also went inside and dropped her schoolbag. She hadn't said anything to him yet because her Pati Babu didn't seem to be in any mood to listen.
Anirudh grumpily took out a pot to make food for Bondita.
She wanted to change her school clothes, but she didn't know how to do so. The whole day yesterday, her Pati Babu had been outside, so she could change in here freely. Otherwise she had changed in the bathroom he made for her, but the sun was already setting, and she didn't want to walk to the bathroom all by herself.
She took her saree from her clothes and glanced at her Pati Babu who was getting vegetables to cut.
"Pati Babu, I can make the food," she told him nervously.
Anirudh looked up to glare at her, making her frown.
"What was the one thing I told you to do?" he bellowed. "First you went and bought a mattress during school time, and now madame wants to make food!"
Bondita clutched her saree and wanted to roll her eyes. He always did this! When he was angry, he just stretched the matter without even waiting for her explanation.
"Rakshas Babu," she muttered under her breath, and then she giggled, finding it suddenly funny.
"Why are you laughing?" Anirudh yelled, peeling an onion. "What was the thing I told you to do Bondita?"
"Study," Bondita answered, really rolling her eyes, trying hard not to laugh.
"Right. So go and do that," Anirudh demanded.
"But Pati Babu..." she started.
"What did I say?" he yelled.
"Study," she repeated.
"There are no buts about it," he responded, his head hot.
"Fine Pati Babu!" she told him, now getting impatient herself.
"Good," he answered, still peeling his onion.
He wasn't used to doing these household chores, so it was taking him an incredibly long time to peel the onion.
Bondita felt so gross in her school clothes. She had a hard time focusing on her studies if she didn't change her clothes first. She had a whole study routine, and she needed it to be perfect -- perhaps this perfectionist trait was something she had learned from her Pati Babu.
"Pati Babu..." she said, trying again.
He just glared at her, making her get a little upset now. First he wouldn't even let her speak, and now he wasn't even understanding that she needed to change her clothes!
What Bondita did next shocked Anirudh. She started to unzip her school dress right in front of him. She was only doing this so she could get his attention and have him understand that she needed something.
His mouth fell open as he watched her unzip the dress.
"BONDITA!" he screamed, feeling his heartrate shoot up with anxiety. He turned his face to look away quickly. "What are you doing?"
"Now will you let me speak Pati Babu?" she demanded, zipping her dress back up, causing him to face her again.
Anirudh just stared at her with shock. She had literally made him dumbstruck.
"Can you stop being Rakshas Babu and listen to me for two minutes?" she demanded, furrowing her eyebrows together. "Just because I'm quiet doesn't mean I'm wrong Pati Babu!"
When she called him Rakshas Babu, his mouth fell open again.
"W - what?" he spluttered, now completely speechless.
