(Set in mid-late season 5; there is a quick author's note at the end)

When Hailey woke up, she grimaced. She felt a dull pain through her stomach, but as quickly as it came, it left. She got out of bed and got ready for work, skipping breakfast since her stomach didn't feel the absolute best.

"Yo, Upton, which is better, chocolate donut or glazed? Ruzek says glazed is better, he's wrong!" Atwater called as she came up the stairs.

Hailey laughed then grimaced, the pain shooting through her side again. "Um, chocolate wins, Ruze," she tried to smile but she knew it was weak.

"You okay?" Kevin asked, noticing while Adam pouted.

"Yeah, I'm good. Just sore, slept funny," she brushed it off and sat down, thankful the pain subsided.

"Damn, I hate when that happens," Kevin shook his head and walked to his desk, eating a chocolate donut.

Jay came in from the break room and sat down across from her. "Morning," he greeted.

"Morning," he looked up and frowned, she was paler than normal.

"You okay? You look pale,"

"I'm good, I'm just tired," she answered, typing something on her computer.

Jay nodded and left her be, but decided to keep an eye on his partner that day.

"Gang fight on the south side, gear up and let's go," Voight came out of his office with his jacket and they all got up and hurried to the locker room.

Hailey had to hide how much pain she was in when she moved a certain way while getting her vest on. She thought she must have a rib out or had pulled something pretty bad.

Jay drove quickly through the city and Hailey grimaced every time he hit a bump and it jostled her stomach. He noticed but didn't say anything yet, they were about to be there and he didn't want to piss her off.

They got out of the truck and went to question neighbors about who started what.

"Chicago pd!" Hailey knocked on a door and waited for it to open.

"What do y'all want?" A man opened the door and glared at them.

"Detectives Halstead and Upton, we want to know if you know anything about the shooting that just happened?" Jay asked.

"No, leave," he went to close the door when a teenager went running out the back and Hailey and Jay went after him once they saw a gang logo on his jacket.

"CHICAGO PD, STOP!" Jay yelled and the kid turned around. He looked absolutely terrified and froze.

"Please don't shoot me, I'm sorry," he begged. He couldn't be more than 14.

"We're not gonna shoot you. Just tell us what you know, please," Jay requested while Hailey was hunched over behind him, trying to breathe through the searing pain.

"Okay," the kid proceeded to tell them what had happened but had refused to give names, so they took him in just to keep him safe till the proper people were arrested.

"Are you sure you're okay?" Jay asked Hailey when he parked at the district, "you're sweating but it's 30 degrees," he pointed out.

"I'm fine, Jay. I just have a rib out or pulled something and running made it worse," she wasn't sure if she was trying to convince him of this or herself.

"Okay," Jay wasn't convinced but followed her up to the bull pen so they could get to work on the case.

She and Voight were watching Kevin and Jay talk to the kid, Drake Moore, when the pain hit again and she nearly dropped to the floor. "Hailey?" Voight asked, concerned.
