(I got a request for Hailey getting sick or getting an infection or something after being in the river, so I'm having this be a follow up to my chapter "The River". I'm also using a request for Hailey having health anxiety)
——
It had been two days since the case that had Hailey jumping into the Chicago River had closed, and three days since she'd been in said river. She'd been given a day off work but didn't want to take it, she didn't want to be alone with her thoughts.
She woke up Saturday morning to Jay's phone ringing and groaned. She didn't feel good, but she wasn't going to tell anyone. Jay answered his phone and she waited for him to tell her if they had to go in or not.
"We got a case," he sighed, rubbing his face. It was 3:30 in the morning.
"Kay," Hailey groaned, sitting up. She got out of bed and grabbed some warm clothes then went to use the bathroom. While Jay was making them coffee to-go, she took a few ibuprofen and tried to make herself look presentable before she brushed her teeth and hair.
Thirty minutes later, they were on scene and going over what they knew and needed to find out. Hailey was shivering and had developed a headache, so she wanted to get out of the cold as soon as possible.
"Okay, everyone, get to the district. Get a board going and start figuring out who we need to talk to. I'm going to work on getting footage," Voight instructed and they dispersed.
Hailey closed her eyes during the drive to the district. Jay didn't question it because it wasn't even 5 AM. They were all exhausted.
As they worked, Hailey noticed she was starting to feel worse and worse. Her head hurt, her body ached, her chest felt congested, she was cold yet sweaty, and her stomach hurt. It was making her anxious.
"Hail, are you okay?" Kim asked, noticing that Hailey had her head resting on her arms.
"I'm fine," Hailey smiled, though it didn't reach her glassy blue eyes.
"Okay," Kim didn't believe her for a second, but she didn't want to draw attention to Hailey either.
Jay also started to see that something was off with his wife. She'd grown quiet and was coughing every once in a while. He could also tell that she kept zoning out, which she only did when she was overly tired or sick.
"Hails, are you okay?" He asked when they had a break.
"I'm fine," she lied. In reality, she felt like she'd been hit by a bus.
Jay didn't believe her but let her be for a little while. An hour later, her coughing got worse and she couldn't stop shivering. Everyone noticed that she wasn't okay, but Hailey was insisting she was fine.
She and Kevin were sent to talk to someone and when they got back, Hailey went to go look for cough medicine. It hurt and she felt absolutely horrible. But there wasn't any and she went back into the bullpen and sat down with her head on her desk. She was almost asleep when they were sent to talk to a suspect, which ended in a foot chase that went on for over a mile.
Hailey was struggling to breathe when the guy was apprehended. She bent over as she coughed and suddenly threw up from the force. Kevin grabbed her long waves and yelled for Jay. Something was really wrong.
"Hailey, talk to me," Jay said, panicked.
All she could do was cough and try to breathe. She was scared and reached out for Jay, clutching his hand.
"Kev, call for paramedics!" Jay said, getting Hailey to sit down on the pavement and breathe. He felt her forehead, she was burning up.
"Damn, Hailey, you're burning up," he sighed, panicked. Something was very wrong. She'd been fine the day before.
