(Oakley's first period, and Hailey isn't home, so Jay needs to get her there because he has no idea how to help and Oakley just wants her mom)
——
Oakley was in a bad mood. She had been for a few days, and now her stomach was bothering her. She was ready for school to be over so she could go home and lay down.
"Oakley, wanna come over?" Her best friend, Allie, asked as they walked to their last class.
"Not today, but thanks," Oakley answered, putting her head on her desk.
It started storming before school ended, only adding to Oakley's annoyance. She hated thunder and wanted to be home with her family. When they were finally dismissed, she all but sprinted to her dad's truck when she saw it.
"Hey, Oaks, how was school?" Jay asked.
"Fine," she huffed, buckling up as Emma tried to mess with her hair. "Emma, stop!"
Emma was only five, she wasn't sure what she'd done to upset her big sister, and she started to cry. Jackson, who was now eight, grabbed a toy to distract the youngest Halstead sibling and calm her down.
"Oakley Mae, cut the attitude and apologize to your sister," Jay brought out the dad voice and Oakley's eyes filled with tears.
"Sorry, Em," she mumbled, putting her head against the window.
"It's okay," the little girl smiled and went back to her toy.
Jay looked back at his twelve-year-old and frowned. Emma wasn't normally super snappy with Emma. She normally fought with Jackson, but hardly ever with Emma. She'd been off for a couple days and he was worried as he drove the kids home. Their nanny had a family emergency and Hailey was going over statements with a victim who had to appear in court in a couple days. So he was on duty.
As soon as they got home, Jay instructed the kids to wash their hands, grab a snack, and start their homework while he put his gun and badge up. Oakley grabbed her snack and went to go upstairs to do her homework in her room. Her stomach still hurt and she was tired.
Jay came out of he and Hailey's room as Oakley went towards the stairs and noticed something on her jeans. "Oaks, did you sit in something at school?" He asked.
"No, why?"
"There's something on your jeans," he pointed out and she looked confused but dropped her backpack on the stairs and went to the downstairs bathroom to see.
Oakley noticed something dark on her pants in the mirror but didn't know what it was, so she pulled them down and her eyes widened and filled with tears, there was blood in her underwear and on her jeans. Something was wrong and she suddenly only wanted her mom.
"D-Dad?" She called shakily.
"What's wrong?" Jay immediately picked up on the fear in her voice.
"I need my phone," she responded.
"Why?"
"Because I need mom!" She snapped.
"Oakley Mae!" Jay scolded her and she began sobbing. She was so scared and her stomach really hurt and she wanted her mom, or aunt Natalie, or Kim, or Vanessa. But mainly her mom.
"Daddy, please! I need to call mom!" She sobbed.
"Okay, but why? What do you need, kiddo?" Jay questioned while he looked for her phone.
"I just need her, stop asking, please!"
"Watch the sass, Oakley. I'm only trying to help. Is it about your clothes?" Jay still hadn't picked up on what was happening.
