(Oakley is 6 and a half, Jackson is 2, Hailey's got a surprise for Jay.)
——
The Halstead family was in a new normal and loved it. Oakley was in first grade and Jackson had started attending pre-school on Tuesdays and Thursdays for a few hours. They'd moved into a house when he was 6 months old and loved it because the kids had room to run and play, and it was multi-story, so Hailey and Jay were able to have some actual time to themselves more often. Oakley did gymnastics and soccer, and Jackson was just a hot mess of a two-year-old boy, getting into everything and always sporting at least 3 bruises.Hailey started noticing something was off in mid October of 2030. She felt tired all the time (more than what was normal for a detective with two young children), her head hurt, her stomach felt off, and she couldn't remember when her last period had been, although that was pretty normal. The other feelings, however, weren't. She didn't really think she was pregnant, but she didn't feel good, and it couldn't exactly be ruled out. She and Jay had spent a weekend just the two of them at the lake in early September while the kids were with their nanny, Abi, and had definitely done enough to result in a baby, but couldn't remember if they'd used protection. So, she dropped Oakley off at school one morning and went to get a test before going back home to take it.
She was relieved when she didn't see Abi's truck infront of the house and ran inside to take the test. She just wanted to know before she even said anything to Jay after all they'd gone through trying to conceive Jackson. So, she went through the steps with two sticks, put them on the counter, and waited for 3 minutes.
Hailey wasn't sure how she felt. She and Jay weren't trying yet, but she wasn't on the pill so they weren't exactly not trying. They had talked briefly about wanting to have one more, but not seriously yet. Jackson was a lot as a toddler, he was way more reckless than Oakley had been, and he was in everything all the time. Nothing was safe. But, they both missed having an infant, and they'd purposely bought a house with 5 bedrooms, however, one basically belonged to Abi because they were pulling so many late nights.
Hailey's timer went off and she jumped a little, having been lost in her own thoughts. She took a deep breath and shook her head. "Okay, Hailey, on three. One, two, three."
She turned them over and gasped. There, in front of her: POSITIVE. She was pregnant with baby number 3. Tears of shock and joy began to fall and she took a picture of the tests before hiding them where no one could find them and heading to work. Hailey had no idea how she was going to tell Jay, but she knew she needed to by the next morning so she could pull put of some of the field work.

Jay knew something was off with Hailey when she got to work, but she blew it off and focused on the case, opting to run things from the district since there was so much surveillance from traffic cams and pods to go through while communicating with the rest of the team. She was good at catching little things on the cameras, so no one thought anything of it, but Jay kept watching her. She hadn't been feeling amazing for a couple of days, but Jackson had had a cold the week prior, so it could have been that she had it. (He was wrong). While Hailey was waiting to get everyone's lunch, she also went on etsy and found a onesie that said "Tie Breaker Coming____". She saw it had good reviews and a good shipping time, so she messaged the shop owner and asked if it could be sent faster than normal if she paid more since she was a detective and needed to pull out of field work ASAP, but had to tell her husband first (And he's a sergeant and would probably figure it out sooner rather than later but she wanted to surprise him). The owner responded in minutes asking Hailey to give her a date and she'd have it there in two days.
So, with the case closing, Hailey went to med to talk to a perp who'd been shot, and went to find Dr. Asher. "Hey, do you have a second?" Hailey asked her.
