Case Gone Sideways:
(I got a request for Intelligence working a case that looked like it would be easy to close, but then something goes wrong at the last minute and it takes a toll on Hailey. And of course, Jay is there to help with the fallout. Set after they got married)
——
It seemed like one of their rare open and shut cases. High school students were OD'ing on a bad batch of drugs another kid was trying to make, and out of fear, they were cooperating. They told Intelligence who it was and where to find him. Perks of offering them a deal if they went to rehab, kids will talk.

So at about 2:30 PM on a cold January day, they geared up and headed to the kid's hiding place.

"Upton, Halstead, go in the front, Atwater and I will be around back, Burgess, Ruzek, wait out here," Voight instructed.

They dispersed and Hailey went and kicked in the door as she yelled, "CHICAGO PD!"

They were clearing the house when suddenly, Hailey felt something against her head and an arm went around her neck. She tried to move but froze.

"Move or scream and I blow your brains out," the kid, James Callan, told her.

Hailey didn't move. Jay heard the noise and stayed hidden as he whispered into his phone that Hailey was being held at gun point.

"Can you get out of the house?" Voight asked.

"I'm not leaving her!" He whispered.

"Atwater and I will come in and try to talk him down, but if you can get out, I want you to go get your rifle and get positioned to take a shot if needed."

"Okay, but you come in first."

Voight and Atwater came in and Jay crept out and ran to the truck.

"Jay, what's happening?"

"Hailey's at gun point, be ready. I'm gonna go get on the roof across the street in case I gotta take a shot. Call a negotiator," Jay rushed out as he loaded his sniper rifle.

"Copy!" Burgess started making calls and Jay ran across the street.

The neighbor was startled to see him standing at her door with a rifle, but led him around back and Jay climbed a ladder up to the roof and got in position.

"Sarge, get him infront of the windows," Jay requested.

Inside the house, Hailey was frozen and had gone pale.

"James, if you shoot her, it's over. You go to prison for life, no juvie. They will try you as an adult, man. Put the gun down and we can help you get a deal," Atwater was trying to talk the kid down.

"NO! You'll just arrest me or shoot me no matter what, so why does it matter if I shoot this bitch or not?!" He screamed, scaring Hailey further. He was completely wasted and high as a kite. The smell of the alcohol as he yelled and tightened his grip on her was sending Hailey into flashbacks of her childhood.

Voight took a step closer and James screamed at him, switched the safety off, and pressed the gun to Hailey's temple. Hailey was crying now. She could normally remain stoic in any situation at work, but there were too many things happening to mess with her head and she was terrified.

"James, do not shoot her!" Voight yelled. "Halstead, take it," James heard him and waved the gun around.

"See! LIARS! That's all you people are, you just want me dead! So I'm taking her with me!" Before they could do anything, the gun went off as Jay pulled the trigger from the roof across the street.

James dropped to the floor, bringing Hailey down with him. She scrambled away from him and pulled her knees to her chest. Thankfully, James had been too high to aim at all and shot infront of her face. She felt it go by just inches from her head and she'd never been more terrified, not even when she and Jay had taken heavy fire in a surveillance van. Yeah, that had been terrifying and she'd had trouble sleeping for a while and had a small panic attack after. But this one had shaken her to the core.
