(Something scares Oakley and she only wants Jay. She's 7 here, Jackson is 3, Emma is a newborn)
——
Hailey and Jay had their third child, Emma Lynn Halstead, on April 23, 2031. Over the last month, they'd been adjusting to life with three young kids. Hailey was still on maternity leave, and everyone had come over one night to hang out once Oakley and Jackson were in bed.
Somehow, the conversation had come to talking about on the job injuries and Jay's stories of getting shot. They hadn't realized that Oakley had woken up to come get water and was listening on the stairs. She didn't make any noise until her dad had stopped talking, then Hailey looked over and saw her oldest peeking from the stairway, chewing on her lip.
"Oakley, did we wake you?" She asked, motioning her over. Oakley ran over to her parents and hugged them then rubbed a sleeping Emma's cheek.
"I want water," she yawned, rubbing her blue eyes.
"Here, mini Halstead," Vanessa grabbed Oakley's water bottle and handed it to her.
"Thanks," Oakley took a few sips then hugged everyone, and not wanting to let go of Jay, before she ran back upstairs and got in her bed, holding her blanket to her chest.
Her daddy was now the sergeant of Intelligence, and her mommy was home with Emma for a while longer. That meant her mommy wouldn't get hurt, but her daddy could. He'd been shot multiple times, it could happen again. She didn't want him to die. But she also knew she probably wasn't supposed to hear that conversation, so she didn't want to say anything to her parents about being scared. Eventually, she fell asleep.
Hailey and Jay woke up to screaming a little after 2:30 in the morning. But it wasn't Emma. It was coming from upstairs. Jay jumped out of bed and ran up there, following the sound to Oakley's room.
"Oakley, what's wrong?!" He asked, flipping the light on. Oakley shot up and ran to her dad, crying. Jay lifted her up and held her close to him.
"Shh, baby. Shhh, you're okay, you're safe," he soothed, swaying.
Oakley clung to him, hysterical. She'd had a nightmare of him getting shot and no one saving him. Jay grabbed her blanket and draped it over her before he turned the light off and headed downstairs.
"What's going on?" Hailey asked, panicked.
"I don't know, I think she had a nightmare. She's shaking," Jay told her, going to pass Oakley to Hailey.
"No!" Oakley tightened her grip on Jay. She didn't want to be away from him.
Hailey's eyes widened, Oakley alternated between being a mama's girl and a daddy's girl, but she hardly ever refused to go to one of them. "Oakley, take a deep breath, kiddo. You're okay, daddy's got you," Jay started rubbing her back.
Oakley started to calm down and Jay got in bed, still holding her to his chest. "Baby, what happened?" Hailey asked, moving Oakley's hair out of her face.
Oakley shook her head and her lip trembled the same way Hailey's did when she was upset. "Baby, talk to us. We can't help if we don't know what's wrong," Hailey tried again, very worried about her oldest.
Oakley looked away and thought about it. She wasn't supposed to hear that conversation, she didn't want to get in trouble. "Just a bad dream," she sniffed, wiping her cheeks.
"About what?" Jay asked.
"I don't wanna talk about it," she said, looking away from her parents.
"Okay, but we are here when you're ready, Oaks. We love you," Hailey said, leaning over and kissing her head.
