An Awkward Proposal

DINNER WENT WELL. Rosalie became quite comfortable with their little group, and dreaded that soon they'd all go back to their normal lives. Barbara was starting her new job with Zoe, Henry and Michelle were going off to college, Kaitlyn was taking a trip to the Bahamas, and Elizabeth and Rosalie would stay together in New York. Rosalie would take some time for their relationship to progress before she'd start travelling again. She'd miss Elizabeth terribly, and couldn't wait for their move to Milan. They opted to stay right at the lake house, instead of renting a place. And Elizabeth would have to soon travel a lot too. So, they'd travel together, how great right? It's not like Rosalie had specific destinations in mind, same as Kaitlyn.
Elizabeth led Rosalie onto the patio of the restaurant. She'd been anxious all night. They'd talked about kids, moving in together and travelling. But they hadn't confessed their feelings. Odd, right? Though both knew what the other felt. Actions always spoke louder than words.
"I know we've talked about so many things. But I just want you to know that I... I..."
Elizabeth wasn't sure if she should say it. Would it be too much? Would it scare her off?
"I love you too, Elizabeth."
Elizabeth's eyes fluttered. She definitely heard correctly. Rosalie pulled her into an embrace, and their foreheads rested against each other.
"I was going to say that I'd never hurt you. But, I love you too, Miss Watson."
Rosalie chuckled. Elizabeth grew fond of her surname a bit too much. She kissed Elizabeth's lips with as much passion as she could muster up. Being with the people who she'd loved, grown to love, and the woman that she was in love with, made her heart swell gigantically inside of her chest.
"You do?"
Elizabeth blushed. She'd scream it on the rooftops, if need be.
"I love you so much, bunny. It might be too soon to feel so much but..."
"Marry me."
Rosalie said just above a whisper. It was definitely too soon for that, but it felt so right. She wanted to spend the rest of her life with Elizabeth, have more kids, grandkids, great grandkids. She'd been so afraid of marriage before, but not anymore, not with Elizabeth. All her fears had diminished-all doubts. She didn't have to worry about falling into a marriage like her parents anymore, because Elizabeth had shown her everything to convince her mind otherwise. Elizabeth was so sweet, so gentle, and so soft. She was so perfect. They say no one's perfect, but even the little flaws that Elizabeth possessed were so perfect, to Rosalie at least.
"Rosalie..."
"I've been in love with you from the moment you jumped me in the kitchen. I've never met a woman like you, Elizabeth. I know that I just got out of an engagement with your ex-wife, but I've never felt something to be so right before. I can't think of one reason why we shouldn't. I don't have to make compromises that I dread, or put up with things that make me sad. I don't have to smile when I'm sad, or want to cry. You're always there for me, and I'll always be there for you. Elizabeth hotstuff Harper, please marry me."
Elizabeth's eyes were watering. She'd never wanted to shout yes in her life. But at that moment, she really did.
"Are you sure that you want to..."
"I'm very sure."
Rosalie swallowed. Was she being rejected? Was it too soon? She felt so stupid. She stepped backward and ran into the restaurant. What was wrong with her? Why did she have to ruin everything? They were in such a good place.
"Rosalie!"
Elizabeth yelled into the restaurant. She noticed everyone seated at the table looking at her, including some others in the restaurant. Elizabeth rushed toward Rosalie who ran into the ladies room.
"Please, leave me..."
"Yes."
Rosalie looked up. What did Elizabeth mean by yes?
"Beth..."
"Yes, I'll marry you."
Elizabeth shouted almost out of breath. Her heart was facing. Her head was pounding. Her cheeks were flushed.
"You don't have..."
"I love you. Accept my answer."
Rosalie wiped her eyes and felt them welling up again.
"Are you..."
"I'm very fucking sure."
Elizabeth pulled Rosalie into her arms and kissed her soundly on the lips. It didn't feel right, not one bit. It felt destined. It felt like everything was falling into place-that the world planned for their love to happen.
"I'm going to be a mother-in-law!"
Kaitlyn squealed to the restaurant filled with people. She'd followed them and overheard their conversation.
"Mum!"
Rosalie walked out of the ladies room, her arm wrapped around Elizabeth's waist.
"I'm gonna cry."
Kaitlyn fanned her face with her hands as tears streamed down her cheeks.
"You're too much sometimes."
Barbara, Zoe, Michelle and Henry pulled them into hugs one by one. Henry was thrilled. He loved Rosalie like his own mother, and appreciated that Elizabeth was finally getting the happiness that she deserved.
"So, you all approve?"
"Of course we do!"
They all yelled at the same time, before bursting out into fits of laughter.
"I mean it might be too..." Everyone glared at Michelle and she gulped. "I think it's amazing though."
She smiled weakly.
"That's why we'll have at least a one year engagement, right bunny?"
Rosalie immediately nodded. She'd do whatever Elizabeth wanted, as long as they were together.
"I can't believe..."
Kaitlyn wiped her eyes. She hadn't cried like that when she found out about Rosalie's previous engagement, at least not tears of joy.
"Mum, please stop crying."
Kaitlyn pulled them both in her arms and kissed their cheeks. She couldn't remember a day when she'd been happier.
