Zoe sat up on the bed, as she looked at her son and wife peacefully sleep. She'd been worrying about Margaret ever since she found out about her upcoming deployment. Iraq was the last place that she wanted her wife to be.
Getting up and heading into the living room, she noticed Kaitlyn was still up and on her tablet reading. The blow-up mattress took over the entire living room, so the only way to reach the kitchen was to jump over it.
"Can't sleep?"
Kaitlyn looked up and removed her glasses. She could see the worry in Zoe's eyes and patted the bed beside her.
"You neither?"
Zoe hopped on and laid on her side. Kaitlyn placed her tablet down and turned on her side as well.
"My pills haven't kicked in yet. Why are you still up?" Zoe sighed, "trouble in paradise?"
"You can say that."
Kaitlyn felt Zoe's worries washing onto her. Taking Zoe's hand, she held it reassuringly in hers.
"Want to talk about it?"
Zoe sighed again. She wasn't sure what she'd do without Margaret. If something bad happened, she wouldn't be able to bare it.
"She's being deployed two weeks after New Year's. I don't know how to feel or what to say."
"She's a soldier. You can't stop her from serving her country, but you can always stand by her side."
"Which side? Iraq is so far away and so dangerous. What would I tell Andrew if his mommy-" Zoe choked up, "dies."
Kaitlyn pulled Zoe's head against her chest, as she soothed her.
"Don't be a pessimist, honey. Think good things. Always." I never thought I'd see the day when Zoe's not optimistic.
Margaret overheard everything that Zoe said. Heading back to their room, she looked at her baby boy asleep and began to tear up. How could she not be around to watch him grow up?
Placing her hands over her eyes, she quietly sobbed, knowing that she was hurting her wife. But she couldn't back down from being deployed-they wouldn't allow her even if she wanted to.
