ZOE AND MARGARET decided to head back to New York to spend some time together as a family, since Margaret would be deployed soon. But mainly because of all the drama that Lee was stirring up. Barbara opted to stay behind, not wanting to leave without Michelle. And Michelle didn't want her Christmas vacation to be over already, not when they still had so many things planned.
Henry and Yasmin had been fighting all morning, not that anyone was surprised. How could he neglect to tell her about all of the drama? It made Yasmin wonder how committed to the relationship Henry actually was.
Yasmin stormed out of their room and headed into the kitchen. She was so frustrated and her cheeks were flushed.
"Want to talk about it?"
Elizabeth asked. Rosalie was still in bed sleeping off her hangover from all the drinking she did the previous day. And Abbi was snuggled up with her, enjoying the warmth of her mother's still body. Miss Bear had slept on the floor for the night, since Rosalie needed her bed. Abbi had no objections, since of course, she loved her mother more than the teddy bear.
"He just allows me to make a fool of myself constantly. I don't care how complicated and messy things are, I'd just like a frickin' heads up."
Yasmin rambled, causing Elizabeth to press her lips together in consideration. Why didn't Henry tell his girlfriend? Was he ashamed of them?
"He probably didn't realize it would be a big deal? You know Henry's not the most talkative type. I know for sure that he was planning to tell you." He's probably just ashamed of my history.
"Honestly, we don't talk about you guys much, other than Abbi," Elizabeth felt a sting to her heart, "he usually tells me everything. I don't know why he left everything out concerning you and your wife."
Elizabeth sighed and looked toward the pantry, contemplating what to make for lunch. With less people in the house, it was a lot less hectic to deal with meals. But she did miss Zoe and Margaret, and even the little kid. Thinking about them made Elizabeth wonder, did Yasmin know that Zoe was Rosalie's ex-girlfriend?
Damn, their group was one complicated one. But Elizabeth considered them family. She'd never been the jealous type, even when she'd heard the stories of Rosalie and Zoe teenage years, and how in love they were. All of that was in the past, and Elizabeth knew that she was Rosalie's present and future.
Yasmin noticed that Elizabeth was trying to justify her son's actions. But was she overreacting? Maybe it just slipped his mind to tell her.
"I don't think he's completely over the whole situation just yet. It bothers him, and he has to deal with Lee's disapproval when it comes to my current marriage."
Elizabeth leaned forward and whispered. She'd had a few conversations with Henry about it all over the years, and he'd always said that he was fine. But she could tell otherwise, she was his mother after all.
"But like how do you deal with it all?" Yasmin whispered back, almost afraid to ask the question. She couldn't believe that Henry's mom married her ex-wife's ex-fiancèe. It made Yasmin realize that her life was pretty boring compared to his, "I mean, it must be difficult."
Elizabeth nodded. Of course it was difficult. But their marriage was worth every tear that had been shed. Elizabeth knew that pursuing Rosalie was one of the best things that she'd done in her life. If it wasn't for that kiss in the kitchen, at Henry's birthday party, all those years ago, she wouldn't be standing where she was, with a beautiful family to call her own.
"It's all worth it-to have her, to be able to love her every day for the rest of my life. Some things are worth the extra effort."
Yasmin adored the relationship that Henry's mothers shared. To go through so many obstacles, and end up with the one who you are destined to be with, was evidence that true love really did exist.
