Quinn
The night is young. It's my turn now. Mila does this every year. She picks someone and she makes them pay. I wonder what she knows about me, about us. Does she know more than what we told her? No. She's my best friend, she respects us. Besides, when she found out about my parents, it was an accident and she made sure to tell me. She's not a good liar. Whatever people say about us, I think Mila is the softest in all of us. She doesn't make it easy for the people she picks but she never attacks them. I don't think I've ever seen her hit someone or say something hurtful to someone who hurt her. We don't know much about her. Mila's business is Mila's business. The same goes for all of us. Sure, she's rude and coldhearted. But, on this night, she still chooses to do something good. This is the way she finds herself in Fire's night. Unlike her, I need my anger out. I gathered it and now it needs to explode.
With everything that happened to Alex and my family. I need to let go. I know Mila must think I am angry with her, for what she did. I am not. I just wished she would have told me instead of taking me off-guard like this. Alex was raped by the fucking mayor. Of course, at first, it was consensual. He called her and she drove to his house. They had some drinks and at some point, he took her to his bedroom. Undressed her and she felt a tight knot in her stomach. She didn't want it anymore. She told him to stop, he didn't. He called her a slut and that he wasn't going to pay her if she kept yelling and crying. Alex told me this and when she did, she started to cry. She's in this line of work because she needs money and she wants to achieve her dreams. I wanted to offer her money but knowing Alex, she would have cut the strings and never talked to me again. We're friends, with benefits. I like her, she likes me. That's it. Even though I wished at some point we could have something more magical than this. But, a relationship goes both ways. She didn't want me well, I wasn't going to be at her feet. What we have satisfies me. That will have to be enough.
''Quinn, you're up next'' Addy scowls. I laugh at her and we all put our masks on. It isn't hard to drive, I can still see. Even at the speed, I am going. I spend too much time thinking, though.
We never ask each other what we'll do. It's a surprise and we kind of test our friendship. Will they stand by me if this goes to shit? We never try to stop each other either. This is our night. We do what we want. No one can stop us.
I drive around town for a while, the music filling Addy's car. No one is in the streets, of course, they wouldn't be. Which lets me complete control over this fucking town. The windows are open and I didn't realize Addy was outside hers before I heard her scream. I glance at her and of course, Addy was doing what she does best on Fire's night. She scares the shit out of us.
This time, it's different. Knowing the four horsemen are in town makes my blood thrill. They'll know who's the boss. We can do what they do, and more. Women are better than men and tonight, we're showing this to them. It's actually weird how tonight is for us but at the same time, dedicated to them. We know they're watching. They heard of us by now. And with Mila's stunt, they must be talking about us right this second.
''Addy sit back down!'' I yell. I am about to hit the breakers and if she doesn't sit, she'll be yanked out of the car. Of course, she listens to me. However, Elsie and her keep laughing. It makes me smile. This feels like a movie. With the music and everything, we're living a dream. I am very lucky to have them.
I stop the car, right in front of my sister's store. I smirk as I twist my head to Mila. I can't see her face through her red mask but I know she's smiling.
''Well, you guys coming or not?'' I ask, climbing out of the car. I can see the lights are on, she must be working. She might not be here but, I hope she is. I slam the door, the keys and the music still working in Addy's car.
