Chapter 51~Red and blue lights

Tobias POV
Tris and I come home from a long boring school day, with our bags filled with homework. She goes into the bedroom and turns the radio on and starts working. Being the man I am, I'll wait till later.

I go watch tv and text the guys for about an hour till I hear the water start up. I peak into the bedroom and tris isn't there so she must be showering. I have the urge to go in there with her but I don't think we're quite there yet.

The shower stops and there's now music playing from the bathroom, her phone I'm guessing. But that's not the only noise I hear, I get up and look out of window. And below me, on the pavement, there's at least six police cars, four ambulances, and two fire trucks. I spot them putting out orange raging flames, while charcoal dark smoke surrounds them. There are people surrounding at a safe distance. Some have soot on them, ragged clothes. That's when I spot two cots with covered bodies.

My hand automatically moves to cover my mouth in shock. It's all happening across from our apartment, right across the street! "What are you looking at?" Tris asks from behind me. I quickly close the curtains and turn to her. "Oh me? Nothing. Nothing!" I say. She gives me the "am I stupid?" Look. "Let me see." She says and walks over. Once she's in front of me I wrap my arms around her and turn her the opposite direction. "Have I ever told you how beautiful you are??" I ask. She laughs. "Or how much I love you." "Many times." She says. She wiggles out of my grasp and goes over to the window.

"Oh my god!" She exclaims. "This... This.." She stutters. "I know." I say. "It's so devastating." She says. "Yeah." She walks over to me and hugs me. I wrap my arms back around her protecting her as if she were in that building. "I'll always keep you safe." I whisper. I whisper it so softly I doubt she heard it, but I did. And that's a promise I've made to her, and no matter what, I will keep her safe.
