AMELIA'S POV
"So, where are we going first?" Mom asks, her voice tinged with hesitation.
Austin looks at her as he grabs his phone.
"We're going to my office first, get that out of the way. I'll text Selena to let her know we're coming so she can pull up our files and prepare any vaccines or things we might need."
"Why can't we just start at yours, Taylor?" Mom asks, sounding a little more nervous now.
Taylor responds quickly, her voice calm but firm.
"It's just easier to start at Austin's. If anyone needs any work done, we don't want anyone to be numb for that and then have to go to my office. It's simpler this way."
"Okay, Selena's preparing everything we might need," Austin says, putting his phone down and grabbing the car keys. "Let's get going."
We all head out to the car, and I can't help but feel a knot in my stomach. None of us are rushing, and it seems like we're all thinking the same thing. Everyone is a little uneasy, but I can't blame them. Taylor seems a little nervous too. Only Austin seems unaffected. I guess when you're a doctor, you don't get nervous about these things. Austin drives us to the plaza where both his and Taylor's offices are located, parking in the lot between their buildings.
"Alright, let's get this over with," Austin says as he turns off the engine and opens the door.
He's calm, as usual, and I try to remind myself that this is just part of life. We walk into the building, and the first stop is the scale. Austin takes our heights and weights, jotting everything down in our files. He's quick and efficient, making it look easy as always. Once that's done, he leads us back to an exam room. The air feels heavier now, and I can tell everyone else is feeling the tension, too. Austin turns to us, his eyes scanning each of our faces.
"So, who wants to go first?" he asks, clearly ready to get things moving.
There's a long pause. I'm pretty sure none of us wants to be the first to go. I look at Mom, then Dad, but neither of them moves.
