TAYLOR'S POV

Not long after, I heard Selena's voice out in the waiting room. I felt my heart race a little, and I quickly made my way to the door to greet her, doing my best to keep the situation low-key and prevent any suspicions.

"Hey, Sel, come on back, let's chat," I called out, giving her a warm smile as I led her into one of the exam rooms.

The plan was simple: get her in here, and once she was comfortable, I'd explain everything.

"We'll just talk in here," I added gently, as I closed the door behind us.

She hesitated for a moment before giving a small nod, following me in. I gestured to the chair beside the exam table.

"You can take a seat if you want," I offered, trying to make the space feel less intimidating.

Selena glanced at the chair, her nerves evident in the way she shifted her weight. After a brief pause, she reluctantly lowered herself into it. I could see how uncertain she was, but at least she was sitting down. As I took my own seat on the stool, I could feel the tension building. This wasn't going to be easy, but it had to be done.

"Alright, Sel," I began, my tone soft but firm. "I know why I asked you to come, but there's actually a little bit of a different reason, too."

I pulled up her file on the computer, my fingers hovering over the keys for a moment. She looked at me with wide eyes, clearly waiting for me to explain.

"What's that?" she asked, her voice tinged with anxiety.

I let out a quiet sigh before continuing.

"You haven't been to the dentist in a while, and well, since we both have some time now, I think it'd be best if we could take care of that today."

As soon as the words left my mouth, I could see her face shift from curiosity to panic.

"W-wait, I didn't agree to this," she stammered, her hands gripping the sides of the chair as if she might bolt at any second.

I quickly moved to reassure her, trying to keep my voice calm and steady.

"It'll be okay, Sel. I'll be quick, and I'll be extremely gentle. We'll get through it in no time, and then we can finally talk about Austin. I promise."

Her eyes widened, and she shook her head.

"I don't think this is a good idea."

Her voice quivered slightly, and I could tell that her fear was already taking over. I nodded sympathetically, trying to soothe her nerves.

"I know you're scared, but honestly, it's not as bad as you're imagining. I'm just going to take a quick look, and if there's anything that needs fixing, we'll take care of it. It'll all be over before you know it."

Selena was still shaking her head, clearly unconvinced.

"You're making it sound like it's a lot easier than it actually is," she muttered, her voice edged with skepticism.

I sighed, knowing that convincing her was going to be a bit of a battle.

"You're going to be fine, Sel. It really can be that easy if you just let it be. I'll take care of you."

With a deep breath, I moved to adjust the chair, gently lowering it to the reclined position. But as soon as the chair shifted, Selena shot up out of it, her face a mix of shock and panic.

"No, no, no," she said quickly, her eyes wide. "I'm not ready for this!"

She backed away from the chair, clearly overwhelmed. I moved towards her, trying to keep my tone calm and reassuring.

"Hey, it's okay. I know this is a lot, but we can take it slow. No one's rushing you, I promise."

I could see how frightened she was, but I also knew this was the only way to help her. She had to face her fear, even if it was one tiny step at a time. She stood there for a moment, her chest rising and falling rapidly as she tried to steady her breathing. I could tell she was on the edge, but I wasn't going to push her too hard. Not yet, anyway.

"We can take it one step at a time, alright? Just a quick check, and then we can talk about everything. No pressure."

I wasn't sure if she was listening, but I could see a flicker of hesitation in her eyes. I just hoped that she would be able to trust me enough to get through this. For both of our sakes.
