PAIGE'S POV

We walked into Uncle Austin and Aunt Selena's doctor's office, and from the moment we stepped through the door, the sounds around me felt unsettling the quiet hum of the lights, the soft murmur of voices, the rustling of paper. I felt that familiar knot in my stomach tighten. Even though I didn't want a checkup at all, I already knew that I wanted to see Uncle Austin. I always felt a little more at ease when he was around, but that didn't make the situation any easier. We approached the desk, where Uncle Austin and Aunt Selena were standing, both smiling warmly at us. Their smiles were kind, but I still couldn't shake the nervousness bubbling up inside me.

"Hey, girls," Uncle Austin greeted us with a soft tone. "Just like last time one of you will be with me, and the other will go with Auntie Sel."

I turned to Uncle Austin right away, my voice barely above a whisper.

"Can I go with you?"

But Mom, who had been standing quietly beside me, gave me a gentle look.

"Paige, sweetheart, you were with Uncle Austin last time. Maybe this time we should switch things up a little. Let Dallas see Uncle Austin, okay?" she said sympathetically.

I glanced at her nervously, the idea of switching felt strange, but I nodded anyway. I didn't want to disappoint her. Mom turned to Dad, a soft smile on her face.

"I'll go with Paige, you take Dallas with you this time. Then, when we go to Taylor's, we'll switch again."

Dad nodded in agreement, and with that, they walked into the first exam room with Uncle Austin, leaving me to follow Mom into the second room with Aunt Selena. My heart started to race. I wasn't as excited as I had been last time, and the thought of seeing Aunt Selena instead of Uncle Austin made my stomach flip. I hated change. It always made me feel uncertain, and I couldn't help but feel scared. I knew I was supposed to be the brave one, the twin who didn't get as anxious, but today was different. Aunt Selena, noticing my hesitation, smiled kindly at me.

"Okay, Paige, want to hop up here for me?" Her voice was soft and encouraging, but it didn't quite calm the flutter of nervousness I felt.

I nodded slowly, my hands gripping the edge of the table as I climbed up, trying to steady myself. This was the last thing I wanted to do right now, but I knew I had to. I tried to convince myself it would be okay, even though my heart was pounding in my chest.

"You're alright, sweetheart," Mom said, her voice soothing as she stood beside me. "Aunt Sel is very gentle. Show her how brave you can be, okay?"

I looked up at her, taking a shaky breath.

"Okay, Mommy," I whispered, trying my best to hold back the nerves that were making my legs feel like jelly.

I knew I could do this, even if it didn't feel like it.
