PAIGE'S POV

"Mommy, is it going to hurt?" I asked, my voice trembling with anxiety.

"Oh, sweetheart," my mom replied gently, her hand brushing my hair back, "Taylor's going to come in and figure out what's causing the pain in your mouth. She'll help make it feel all better, and I promise, she'll be very gentle."

"But I—I'm scared," I whimpered, my heart racing at the thought of the appointment.

I didn't want anything to hurt, especially not in my mouth.

"I know, honey, it's okay to be scared," my mom said, her voice soft and reassuring. "We're going to find out what's going on, and then we'll help you feel all better."

I tried to take a deep breath, but my stomach twisted with nerves as I waited. Moments later, Taylor and her friend Karlie came into the room, and I felt a rush of anxiety flood through me.

"Hey Paige," Taylor said with a warm smile, crouching down to my level. "Let's see what's going on with that tooth, okay?"

Her voice was soft and calm, like she was trying to make everything feel better before we even started.

"Y-yeah," I replied, my voice barely above a whisper.

"Want to come take a seat in the chair, and we'll figure out what's bothering you?" Taylor asked, motioning to the exam chair with her hand.

I looked at my mom, unsure if I could do it. She smiled softly and nodded at me.

"You're okay, Paige. Go take a seat, sweetie," she said gently, giving me an encouraging look.

With my heart pounding in my chest, I slowly walked over to the chair and sat down. As soon as I did, Taylor lowered the back of the chair so I was lying flat. The room suddenly felt much bigger, and the light above me made everything seem so much more intimidating.

"Alright, princess," Taylor said, settling beside me. "Can you point to which side of your mouth is hurting?"

I hesitated for a moment, my fingers trembling slightly, before I pointed to the left side of my mouth.

"This side," I whispered.

"Okay, sweetie, I'm going to start on the other side first," Taylor said, her voice calm and steady. "Can you open your mouth wide for me?"

I nodded, trying to relax, but my nerves kept getting the best of me. I opened my mouth, and Taylor began checking my teeth, starting from the right side—the side that wasn't hurting. I could feel the cool instruments against my teeth, and I tried to focus on my mom's voice to distract myself. But as Taylor moved closer to the side that hurt, my stomach tightened with fear. Then, without warning, Taylor gently tapped on one of my teeth, and I yelped, the sudden pain shooting through me.

"Oh, I'm sorry, honey," Taylor said immediately, her voice filled with sympathy. "Let's move on and check the rest of your mouth."

She finished looking at the other side of my mouth and then turned to my mom, speaking softly. "It looks like she has a bit of a cavity, and it's a fairly good size. The tooth is actually a baby tooth, and it's already loose. In her case, it might be best to take it out."

"Take it out?" I repeated, my voice cracking.

I was already scared enough, and the idea of someone pulling out my tooth made everything feel a hundred times worse.

"I'm so sorry, honey," Taylor said gently, noticing the look on my face. "But it's already getting loose, and it's not going to hurt you once it's out. Plus, a new tooth will come in to take its place. This one won't hurt anymore."
